Excellent podium form, way better than the usual lopsided flailing. Gymnast? Diver? Trapeze artist?

absolutely! i realize that racing -- as a racer -- is a very selfish activity. races don't come together without a ton of effort (and very little money being made). when i am racing i make it a point to thank as many people as i can.

it was truly nice to be on the other side and assist as many racers as i could. driving the wheel car also offered a very cool perspective on the race. in the future, i'll volunteer as often as i can.

That popped into my head, too! Grace, total grace, Valygrl - you look great!

You folks are lighting a little candle in me that is making me want to volunteer when I can. I know it's gotta be so satisfying.

Bay Area Senior Games, 5K ITT and 40K Road Race

This race featured very small fields, and the course was the CCCX course. Very, very hilly - not my forte. My plan was do one thing. Try to beat NH, the only other 60 - 64 woman there, in both the ITT and the RR. My team mate, HF, was there as well, and I had good odds she'd be the overall winner, and she was. She has become an exceptional rider. Me? I think I'm going backwards. I've ridden this course better than I did today.

5K ITT. This was my fifth time trial, ever. I had thought through the course, visualized what I thought I needed to do and where. I was nervous, as always, but reasonably confident I'd have a good ride. The warmup was to protocol (Ex's writeup), and went exactly to plan. I got to the line two minutes before my start, so I was warmed and ready when the countdown came. The start was not done with a holder, it was a road bike start, and then clip in. Nit wit me missed the clipin, smacked my left shin with the pedal (I do that to myself every few months whether I need to or not), and lost a few precious seconds there. I did get rolling and got up to speed smartly, accelerating to a good pace. I went up a gear higher than I thought I could sustain, felt the lactic start to burn, then changed down and spun up. I held that pace to the bottom of the first climb, and then didn't, as it seemed to me, loose all that much momentum on that hill. I even passed the rider who went off in front on me on that climb, and that felt good. A short descent follows that climb, and then there is a hard 90 right turn, and immediately following that turn are a series of ascending rollers, 8% average grade, but they are short. This morning, not only did I have to contend with the rollers, but there was a 15 MPH wind swirling around on them. I felt okay going up them, got right to the knife edge of blowing, but kept the balance teetering on that edge. I'd recover a tad on the flatter spots and then dive back into the pain cave on the next incline. Even so, my speed up those rollers wasn't what I wanted to see.. I hit on the top of the last roller of the first set (there are two sets), and as a result carried what I thought was good speed and momentum into the last roller. I was better on that hill, holding higher speed (I can't see my power, small numbers and I don't wear my glasses) all the way to the top. I spun up and tried hard to bury myself on the flat following that roller, and held 22 MPH all the way to the finish, which was on top of another roller. My time was 12:13 for 5K. NH, right behind me, beat me by 43 seconds. Room for a lot of improvement on my part.

40K RR. I rode my CAAD 10 for this race, and I decided to use my Cosmic Carbones with the IRC tubeless tires, which meant no power. I also had a 11t - 28 cassette on those wheels. I'd been training with a 12t - 25, so I was happy to have the lower gear if I needed it. I did a 20 minute warmup on the road, arriving at the line just three minutes from the whistle. Good timing again! The RD told us he was going to start the men and the five women together so we could work together in the wind (it was now up to 20 gusting 30 MPH). I spotted NH, and was determined to either hold her wheel, or have her hold mine. She and I had discussed the wind after the ITT that morning and agreed the best plan was to stick together. That was based on a five woman field, not 20 or so combined with the guys. When the whistle blew, that plan went right out the window. One of the guys drilled it right after we got up to speed, and away we went. I was thinking "what, we've got six laps of this in this wind, and someone wants to jack up the pace and try to blow this apart - all ready?" NH took off, and I went after her. My team mate was right in front of me, and we stayed attached to the guys. When we hit the bottom of the first climb, we were all together, and managed to stay that way to the steep section (8%). I shifted down, and the chain started jumping on the cog, so I shifted down again, and it caught, and then let go. I had to shift up twice to get it to reengage, and by the time it did, I'd lost the momentum I had and the pack. I in effect had seven speeds, with three missing or unreliable. I gambled on bridging up, even though I was certain I'd need the matches later on, but with the wind, I thought it was worth the effort. I couldn't reattach, though, they were descending by then, I wasn't making up ground on them. Ex and I talked about such a scenario yesterday, and he had suggested that I settle into a pace I knew I could sustain. I did just that. Two guys rode by, I tried to get their wheel, but they were having none of it. Nice of them. I did catch them on the next lap and returned the favor, not seeing them again for the rest of the race (ha). I don't know how things played out in front of me, but I found out that NH was dropped as well, and on the first lap, too - and if I could have stayed with her, we could have had a race. As it was, I was lapped by five men on my last lap, but I did get a second in my age group - by default.

My team mate really shone out there. She won the women's ITT outright, and only four men posted a (slightly) faster time. She was right around 10 minutes. In the road race, she stayed with the men's group for about two laps, and then diced it out with a persistent "new" woman rider was a track coach and marathoner (those people can get up hills, riders or not). She ended up winning the women's road race outright.

Only an okay day for me. I don't feel all that good about it, because my performance in the ITT was not up to par. The road race was sloppy, too, and a mechanical didn't help.

Two silver medals, but they don't feel earned.

Well done
Any gels for the the podium spots ;)

LAJ 05-12-14 10:40 AM

Same course as valygrl and rwt.

55+ , 31 out of 40-some. Again, a wide open course, but people seemed to funnel down to 2-3 lines. Easy enough to get up there, and be towards the front. It seemed there was a dominant team out there, and they didn't like anyone but them near the front. Oddly, I would get towards the front, and it seemed the same fellow on that team would be on my side shortly after, and start crowding me into the pack. First couple of times, I thought coincidence, the third time, I figured it was real. That time I held my ground, and he rode next to me for half of a lap. I don't know enough of this to know what was going on, but I certainly wasn't a threat. Either way, the last corner, it went to 5-6 wide, slowed, sped up, and I just had nothing. I wasn't sad, as I was able to move around, and early on, there was a jump off the front that I saw happening, and was able to go with. This course isn't conducive to that, so it was short lived. Not great, but I figure if I can gain these guys confidence in my bike riding, I will be better able to race with these guys.

35+4 27/75 as rwt said, this was kind of scary. The most nervous I've been since crashing last year. It was speedy, and scary, and faster than the 55+, which isn't usually the case. Maybe because it was the 35+, with those whippersnappers involved. I actually felt a lot better this race, and was also able to move around, and actually did find rwt's wheel a few times. I didn't have the guts to play in the last corner, so my position was not good at all. I went to the inside, which was the same line as rwt, though a bit further back. I was able to maintain speed, and actually passed a lot of folks, though that's not saying a lot, at this point. That's about as good as I can get in this report. I felt the earlier race about two from the end, so that's when I decided to try and move up. I did, then shortly after started getting shuffled to the back.

Out of town two weeks ago, so the recumbent in the hotel was all I had that week. Flew back in on Sunday, and immediately caught a cold. I knew it was a bad head cold, but I felt good on Friday, and OK on Saturday. Sunday, I was coughing up my lungs, so no trainer yesterday. It must have been worse than I thought. Either way, funner races are ahead, and I look forward to those. No excuses, and I likely should have stayed home, but I want the experience.

sarals 05-12-14 05:42 PM

LAJ, nice. You rode safe and smart. Good on ya! Sounds like the strength is there.

valygrl 05-12-14 05:46 PM

LAJ - good job - just the idea of a 75 man pack gives me the heebie jeebies, after how sketchy my 33 woman pack was.

Sorry about your cold - it's almost like a guarantee - fly -> get sick. I have to go out of town for work after Memorial Day, luckily after my A race, hopefully will have enough time to recover before State RR and TT champs. :->

shovelhd 05-12-14 08:29 PM

Keep learning, LAJ. Fight for those wheels when it's time.

LAJ 05-13-14 07:35 AM

Thanks folks!

One note I forgot to add. When you put your battery on the charger, leave yourself a note, or reminder, or something. I noticed it wasn't on my bike as I was putting it on the truck that morning. As shifting is kind of important, perhaps a second battery may have to go in my bag.

shovelhd 05-13-14 07:58 AM

This happened at Bethel this year. My battery is in the seat post so it's tough to forget.

The Rent training race, A field, 60 degrees, significant tailwind sprint, top ten. This is a race in the parking lot of a college football stadium. It used to be an old airfield, thus it is wide open and always windy, even in the dog days of summer. The race is usually dominated by Cat1's. My instructions were to "attack like it's your last race ever, then attack some more". Results really don't matter here so everybody treats it for what it is, a training race, so it is always one big attack fest. I was wearing my backup shoes because my main shoes have two broken Boas, and of course, I missed my clip in. Good thing I started up front. Went straight to the back. A devo rider took off at the ***. I spent the first lap or so getting to the front and then I attacked. Got caught. Attacked again. Got caught. Got a chase group together. Attacked the chase group. Fell back. There were two groups OTF and nobody worked together, it was just attack after attack. After a while my attacks got softer and I knew I wasn't getting away so I would attack, they'd get on my wheel, and we'd close on the chase group. After a few laps of that, with others chipping in, we caught the chase group right before the leaders lapped us. With 2 to go I put myself on one of the leaders' wheel and used him as a leadout, crossing the line in 5th but there were six up the road, and at least one was in front of me. So somewhere in the top ten. At least I think so. Doesn't matter anyway. This one was for the workout and that mission was accomplished.

I was wondering how the race went. Last week the A race was absolutely insane, attacks from the *** like it was the last lap of the race. (I was watching, not racing, for those that didn't know). Lots of 1s and 2s, for example the 17 yo Junior that won his race at Battenkill couldn't stay away for more than a few laps. It was brutal. I decided I'd do the B race at that time.

In the Bs (Cat 3-4-5) I was really pressed at times, even considered quitting once. I saw really high heart rates, numbers I pretty much never see (178-180 bpm, instead of the more normal Cat 3 164-168 bpm). Because of the training-race / informal type racing I could try things and be generous with efforts. I think this allowed me to work much harder than normal without (too much) fear of getting shelled. I did one big bridge, closed one moderately significant gap, and moved up really hard in the last lap. I intentionally sat up in the sprint because I didn't want to "be that guy". I wanted the 4s and 5s to sprint it out.

As it turned out a guy that's new to the area got second. I first met him at Bethel when he came up to me and said, "I just realized YOU'RE THE GUY WITH THE VIDEOS!". I guess he'd been watching the clips over the winter and didn't realize who it was that did them until he saw me at Bethel. Since he was originally from the west he had no idea of the courses, etc, around here, and he used the clips to learn courses and tactics.

After the Rent race he said that in my clips I talk about being on the inside for the sprint (I do?). Plus he knew that I would be contesting the sprint, at least as far as he knew. Therefore he followed me to the line, went around me when I sat up. I heard him tell me this but didn't realize just how much he followed me until I saw a helmet cam clip from my teammate's point of view. The new guy really did follow me and do a good sprint, so I'm glad.

He was a 5 at Bethel, not sure of his category now, but it's great to see the progression/learning/etc.

Racer Ex 05-15-14 11:09 PM

Did the local "A" crit tonight up in Carson City. Really windy. Felt good, shook things out. Took a flyer with 5 to go, held it for over a lap but got caught with three to go. Back started cramping and I wasn't feeling much love so I bagged. Surprisingly I didn't notice the altitude.

I think I've finished 3 races this year. "Stuff that matters" is coming up. That I'm going to finish.

shovelhd 05-16-14 05:15 AM

This thread has missed you greatly.

Moyene Corniche 05-16-14 07:46 PM

I'm a bit late to the party, but I feel a comment is warranted on page #84 's main topic of mixing fields...
As a former promoter of a 2 day stage race, I would have never considered mixing fields of Women's and Men's... Not that the chief referee didn't suggest it, but I cannot see the logic, why have a race then ? combining 3's and 4's, sometimes it can be OK but more often than not combining 2 very disparate fields is a recipe for skewed race results... I always wanted the racing to be on it's own merits..

As for women's, any promoter that combines women with the men is a promoter's race where the women should say " Sorry we are racing elsewhere. " There is a minimum field quota but that should not mean carte blanche to mix the two... I had times where my women's draw was below the hoped for number, but regardless, 10-15 or 50+ in numbers, it is still a race and any number of racers that have entered the race deserve the respect to be treated like everyone else.... And have their own race....

To me this is like in Tennis where so many USTA players sandbag and play down. I had it happen to me a couple years ago. I played a singles match where I got breadsticked and bagelled, ( 6-1 / 6-0 ) I play as a 3.5-4.0 rank but on this occasion nothing I could do on court worked.
A couple days later at my Tennis Club I looked at a photo of our club's Pro ( J. Albrikes, a former multiple years number One New England player ) playing my same opponent.
So I can understand where there would be frustration on the women's for being mixed into a race that is and should never be combined...
