I'm thinking about this trip starting in Wolf Summit riding to Parkersburg. So my questions are how are the trail conditions and looking for some ideas on doing this solo. As mentioned I would do this east to west to take advantage of the downhill.
In a perfect world I would be able to get my wife or one of my kids to come along. This is not an ideal world. I went to Salem College which is near Wolf Summit and know that area fairly well although I graduated in 1981. Back then the the RR was still in use. I did my student teaching in Ellenboro and knew people that lived in Wolf Summit. I'm sure it hasn't changed too much but there wasn't much there back then.
I would probably do this next spring/summer. I would do the 70 miles in one day. Anyone with current knowledge of the area have suggestions on how to do this would be great. I live in PA, about 6 hour drive to Clarksburg.

The issue with trails like this is that what conditions exist today could be totally different next year thanks to winter weather. I rode the GAP around the same time this year and last year. There were sections that were in better condition this year than last year, when some summer storms washed away some of the limestone and created ruts in places. This site suggests that the trail is best ridden in the summer and fall, after the time of spring maintenance:
