The White's Ferry Impasse

Did a short ride on the C&O Canal Towpath from Sycamore Landing to White's ferry and back, about 17 miles between mile markers 27 and 35.

Haven't done that section in a long time - it is a pretty boring stretch of the Towpath. But, wanted to see what White's Ferry looked like as the dispute rolls on. Both sides have done very good jobs of painting the other side as the villian.

The sign on the VA side (lower picture) says "Stop Eminent Domain Abuse"

Wow! I remember reading about that. Seems like that was years ago.

Uh…Okay.

They really just need to build a bridge somewhere near there. But truly is a shame about the ferry being non-op.

An update - new White's Ferry owners plan on selling to the state so that the state can eminent domain the land to reopen the ferry: https://wtop.com/local/2023/03/no-de...montgomery-co/

I'm unclear as to how this affects something related to cycling ?.

The ferry is a part of the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP, C&O) bike trail, or was apparently.

Not the GAP, that doesn't have a ferry crossing as it's a former rail line. That leave's C&O although I don't see that the trail actually uses the ferry.

I have to admit I've never been there (but it is on my bucket list) and I'm not sure how it all works. But I know it has been in some kind of controversy for the last couple of years. I'm sure there are others who have first hand knowledge of the situation. The ferry is mentioned in the GAPTrail.org website:
https://gaptrail.org/amenities/white...c-river-ferry/
I just noticed it says C&O mile 35.5

It doesn’t use the ferry. It was a way to cross the Potomac to access that C&O from VA.

One can use White's ferry and cross the Potomac to the WO&D trail. It makes a nice long loop. Traffic along RT15 is high but one has a shoulder and the time on RT15 is short.

My dream: Mont Co. buys WF and teams with NoVa to make a real bike/ped connection to the WO&D. Both counties are very bike friendly and have lots of $.
