It would be quite a site to see crutches hanging off your bike. Keep on cranking, you too will be able to ride GBs 300K/10K biking extravaganza.

I should have done this from a different angle but you get the idea. ;)

You can ride on a tubular that is flat. How does that work? Does it ruin them?

Tufo tubular clinchers aren't repairable anyway unless the hole is small enough that sealant works.

They look like wheelie bars to keep the dragster from popping too high of a wheelie! ;)

We're approximately in the same neighborhood [no pun intended] for my 13.3 mile ride to work:

Any ride will automatically show more climb the more distance there is. 10,000 feet of climb on a 190 mile ride equates to 53ft/mile. Which would be about 2500' of climbing on a 50mile ride OR about 900' on a 17 mile ride. That's the same as my commute to work. ;)

Dat true, but 10,000ft of climbing is still 10,000 ft climbing:)

Your bike is starting to resemble a semi.

I'm just wondering if anyone has tried to "surf" on that board over top of his rear wheel while he was pedalling. ;)

Charlie, I remember reading a ride report of your 2006 C&O trip somewhere.
Where is it? In the forums or on another site? -GB

It will be like climbing up a ladder for almost 2 miles .......on a bike:eek: I know I should just HTFU. I remember my C&O trip. If I had to climb a major hill in the last 20-30 miles I don't know how I would have fared. I probably could have climbed it but it would have been ugly. Now riding a flat road for that long also poses problems as you never really change positions. I would have welcomed rolling hills. I really think a topography like southern MD would be perfect for long distant cycling. Coasting would have been a nice option.

I think i posted it on the long distance biking forum. When time allows I will look. One thing I remember is to eat real food. Gatorade and power bars can ruin your stomach.

I'm in AZ, had to duck into Buckys to do my weekly Time Mag job. I was all suited up to go on a long ride this a.m and got the call, have to settle for an afternoon into evening ride, as it will be cooler. About 85 now I imagine but dips to about freezing at night at the base of the mountains. Nice and cozy in the tent though with the sounds of coyotes calling to each other.
Quite a bit of development going on here north of Tucson, serious sprawl, but to their credit they have included extensive bike infrastructure.
You have to be very careful to stay hydrated here. Few out Sunday, so I did just a few miles then after setting up my bike and helping one of my camping neighbors with hers. You meet so many people when camping, especially out west.
I did 45 yesterday, planned to do more but got a late start and trying to get the lay of the land, found some beautiful stretches of road.
I'll have pics when I return. Gotta go ride.

Barry-That's incredible mileage, especially for recuperation miles.

Harry...85!! you suck:notamused: We've had chilly rains (40s) for the last few days. Should be 60 tomorrow w/ fog Well I guess you should have fun anyway, don't worry about us, we'll survive. (Spoken like Eyeore on Winnie the Pooh)

Charlie, was it you asking about Dorsey Run Road? I drove over there this evening, from Guilford Road (to the south, near MD 32); it was all clear up to MD 175, where there were barriers. In looking at my map now, though, it seems like that's about where Dorsey Run ends anyway . . . ?

joshandlauri 03-17-09 07:17 PM

Hey there everyone, hope you get out to ride tommorow. I will not, but I have good reason, the baby will be have her birthday party tomm, she'll be 1. It seems like yesterday big brother turned one (now 4 1/2). No Glenelg ride as I had a dinner to go to, may next week, anyone wanna go?

I did squeeze in 12 miles today from here to the inlaws, Same normal route, canton, harbor, westport to lansdowne. I hit 2 or 3 solid bone jarring bumps, one time my Id and phone popped out my stem bag, then going down the hill by 295 after westport @ 30mph I heard a noise and saw a white spot behind me in the air, I thought oh well maybe some threw something at me. Then after getting to the inlaws I realize my back up light PBSF was GONE! I headed out back to westport 2 hours laters and found it in a pile of leaves still blinking, not a scratch on it. I swear I saw it get up 20 feet in the air. (of course I didn't think it was my blinkee then). One tough light, came off many times still in new condition. Now I have a rubber band wrapped around it to the seat bag, it ain't going anywhere now.

Be safe.

I think there is a new stretch of DRR north of 175. I think it emerges between Rt 1 and the MARC train. At least that is what I thought. It was orange coned closed and looked new or recently repaved. There has been a lot of industrial park construction going on in this corridor over the last 5 years.

balto charlie 03-18-09 06:52 AM

Fog was really thick this morning as I rode down into the Patapsco river valley. The entire front of me was covered with fog droplets by the time I got to the train. The light from my headlamp was really cool looking though. The train had to get a lot closer to the station before it could be seen. Which means drivers probably never saw me this AM.
PS: I guess Harry won't have to worry about the fog:thumb:

:o So, this is kind of embarrassing, but I made a wrong turn in my own neighborhood this morning! The thick fog really threw off my perception. I had to abandon the glasses almost immediately; although they usually de-fog pretty quickly, they were having none of that today. The helmet mirror was getting pretty dewy also.

I was a little worried about my visibility, too, but nobody seemed to be buzzing me any more closely than usual.

I've been running 2 Dinotte 140L tailights--one on the bike and one on the helmet. I didn't notice any problem being seen even on the 45 mph Rossville Blvd with no shoulder.

You missed a turn:roflmao2: Well you're new to the hood so I guess I won't give you too hard of a time.

I didn't see the TRAIN with REALLY REALLY bright lights until it was fairly close. I know Dinottes are bright but they can't compare to MARC's nuclear fusion headlights:)

Yeeeeeeaaah, that's it!! And this is only my 3rd or 4th commute, and I never exit the 'hood by that route unless I'm on my bike *and* going to work (all car routes are different.) Uh huh!

Umm, no, that's not working . . . I still feel like a doofus.

But as of this week, I'm now able to have a more regular commuting routine, so the unfamiliarity should wear off quickly!

I must've gotten really lost getting to work this morning.
Sure was a nice ride though. :)

So, are ya gonna try to make a claim at work for mileage? ;)

We need to complain to Google--they don't have a dropdown menu selection for "By bicycle".
