NR- I would expect some equipment wear as you do tons of miles, and on some brutal roads. maybe you should have some regular old 32 spoke wheels.

i ran the bmore half marath today. hr avg 169 or so, way more than my training avg. running is hard.
ride tomorrow. My Madone is back with more free **** from Trek, bb cartridges.

I would say your short ride option was fortuitous as you may have had the blowout way out there.

joshuaandlauri 10-10-09 06:58 PM

Yeah, my ride sucked bad. I kinda knew I was pushing it attempting those miles, I just didn't know how bad I'd be.

I told NR, that I am in a lot worse shape than last year, very few rides over 50 miles, no intervals or hill repeats, I'm eating like crap and 12-15lbs over this time last year and not riding to work daily.
Felt like a *** today.

Legs felt like they were starting to cramp around mile 20 or so. After having cramps last ride to Annapolis I didn't want to have to them 60 miles from home.

As of today I'll cut back on soda drink milk or water instead, start taking water to work. No more fast food and if I have to I'll let the air out of my car tires to get motivated to ride everyday so be it.

Today was my last longish ride til I get in better shape.

Nr, thanks for the ride, sorry I couldn't make it.

joshuaandlauri 10-10-09 06:58 PM

Ha, BF blocks out me using P O S (without spaces of course)

Josh... no worries. I'm sure you'll get it together when you are ready.

Yes... this is very true. I knew I was pushing that wheel. I was damned lucky.

I thought P.O.S. WAS "point-of-sales" ;)

I think you'll see NR with 32's about as soon as you'll see me with 16's

Too hard for me. Sounds like you did good Harry. Congrats. But I don't know what "hr avg 169" means. :o

Spot on!

I believe he's saying that he was able to average a heart rate of 169 beats per minute (BPM) for the entire run. Since we don't know his maximum heart rate (MHR) or his lactate threshold heart rate (LTHR) there's no way to gauge the goodness of the effort. 169 seems to be in the ballpark for LTHR, though. LTHR would be close to the intensity that a runner would use for a race as long as a half marathon.

The last half that I ran (I think) was March 17, 2002 - http://www.coolrunning.com/results/0...sar_set1.shtml

They said Trek doesn't think the frame is toast. They put in new BB cartridges. I told them I was skeptical and that I would be back first sign of problems. I may just sell the bike as I'm having my old Cannondale powder coated.

NR-That time blows mine away but I admit to being very slow. My cardio system is def not there yet.

Harry, best of luck on getting the cycling sorted.

BTW, don't sell yourself short. Today, at this moment, I am not physically able to run a halfM, so what I've done in the past is mute. You -are- faster.

I did 50 today, what a beautiful day for riding. Of course I had to take it easy after yesterday, Corbett Rd. is very beautiful heading up to Old York and good clmbing coming away from the NCR.

NR-Thanks, I'm quite happy with just finishing the half and finishing in my expected time. Next year I'll be nipping at the heels of the Kenyans, not, but hopefully faster. I need more training and a thorough medical work up on my cardio and respiratory capacity.

NoRacer 10-11-09 06:20 PM

I agree with Harry--today was a great day for a ride.

I had to do it--went after the 215K today, since we didn't finish it yesterday.

NR, I think I  you.

My most recent Facebook status update: "Yeesh. The monsoon 24 Hours of Booty. Followed by the Shenandoah vertical rock-fest. Followed by the gale-force Seagull Century. :0 :0 I think for the next few weekends my butt is gonna be on the couch, watching football and drinking beer."

The Seagull was its usual crazy self. The feature this year was 40 miles of pretty fierce wind, most of it in the face. The temperature went from 78 degrees at 8:00 to 65 at 3:00. Rain for just a short time, right at the beginning (during which I was replacing the rear-wheel tube, which had exploded  -- considerately enough, while I was in the dining hall having breakfast.)

The only time I did the Seagull was 2007 when I took this pic unintentionally featuring who? You, dear.

That day was so good, I probably won't do another one--just to keep the memory.

Oh, yeah, I remember you posting that picture a while back -- of course I don't remember you actually taking it, because I don't think I had even met you yet! (At least not in person, anyway.) Pretty bizarre coincidence that I'm randomly in the background!

Yeah, 2007 was great, definitely the best since I started going in 2003.

26 miles: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path...nd-Park-SS-26m
Tentative 45 mile route: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...,0.308647&z=12

Shorty ride seems perfect.
Middle ride: I am not totally positive that you are allowed to leave your car parked in that Mt. Wash parking lot. Probably fine though.
Greenspring is a little bit difficult but no big deal.- it's a good connector here to the park.
Is the construction complete along smith ave into Mt. Washington? That sucked the last time I rode it. If it's not it's easy to re-route (7 mile to Wallis to Cross Country). Good route.
Long ride: Finally, googlemaps shows Deepdene going through to Edgevale. I would put in a warning about that super steep section of Dogwood. I wouldn't wish anyone to climb up it, but I think I dislike coming down it more. A blind curve at the steepest part. Yikes. Safe, only if you know to slow way down.

No probs with that route either. Good rides Barry. -GB

Playing ariound with an east side 300K from B'more to Middletown PA:

Comments? (It originally only went as north as Elizabethtown, hence the file name)

That's got a lot of my "susquehanna splendor" ride in it.
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/269220
I thought about throwing that out there too, but I feel pretty strongly about riding a confirmed route.
I don't think I've got the mental fortitude to handle 300k of riding + another 20k (or another hour) of getting lost.

Pre-rode the Point to Point today. Nice ride, but it took me a while because I was doing a lot of note taking.
The cue is much clearer now and that's good. The only crappy thing is that Fort McHenry is really not even worth visiting now. No bikes allowed on any path and at least 1/3 of the park is under construction.
I'm gonna leave the start there anyway.

The Human Car 10-12-09 06:11 PM

I did the Tawneytown BBC ride today (and got caught by the "Hey you are not from around here" police, hence the corrected spelling.) Total for the day 108 miles and now sitting down to chocolate ice cream (competing for Maxine's emoticons ;) ) Absolutely gorgeous country side out there, I really want to got out there again when the fall colors happen.

Dear Park Rd was closed so I ended up coming home on 140 between Westminster and Reisterstown. So in the midst of rush hour traffic I'm taking the truck climbing lane doing 8 mph with cars doing 60mph all around me.

GB thanks for the feed back, I'll respond more a bit latter.

That's what a cell phone with built-in GPS is for.

Anyway, where's your sense of adventure? Louis & Clark didn't "pre-ride" their journeys and they had much more adversity to deal with. j/k

Most of the route on the Middletown 300K I've ridden when I did the 3:30am ride start to Mt Joy [in the rain] and this past Sunday's ride. The portion up River Rd to Middle town promises to be scenic, then I'll ride a higher traffic road to Mt Joy's Prospect Rd south, head back into the Columbia area, and find River Rd on the south side of the bridge. I'd follow that road, but stay close to the river for the scenery, hence the little side trip on River Hill Rd. River Hill will get me back to River, then Holtwood where I climb out of the valley to Quarryville, take 272 south to Conowingo... yada, yada, yada. No worries! :thumb:

What could happen? Heck, if the weather is good, I might just ride that this coming weekend starting at 3:30am, again.

<6k of climb (according to bikely) seems remarkably low for the distance and the territory.
Does that sound right?

Absolutely not. I'm having it recalculate it. They say check back in 24 hours for the new chart.

When do the pancake rides start up again? mmmm, pancakes. Sorry, I've been absent of late; it seems I've gone and gotten myself addicted to cyclocross and I'm focusing on figuring out how to do better in my races. As it turns out, being fat and out of shape is detrimental to success in this form of racing as well, geesh!

Anyhow, I haven't ridden with any of you guys this year (intentionally) so it'd be nice to get together at some point and do a ride.

Mike

Edit: November 1st is the next Pancake ride in Carroll County.

Walking huh wha? Don't get it. I just wish I had time to do a 300k. I think I just need to focus on what I'm doing now, sub 50, spin, weights, run, swim, etc.

Speaking of cyclocross, gal at the gym mentioned CX practices at Druid Hill at 5:30 Wednesday. Today is Wednesday and I may go to check it out, though I only have a mtb at this time.

Hey everybody: just got back from a W. VA climbing trip. Leaves are peaking in the western mnts. I was to go out there again this wknd for a camping/biking trip but weather is calling for snow:eek: We'll see what happens.

Isaias: 12K, very impressive, especially with 2.5 months to go. I hope to ride as well as you when I get to your age....oops too late:)

GB: hope to do the on again off again ride in Nov. I ain't going if the weather sucks. Did Trevor ever ride the C&O in a day??

Harry: I don't think they are obsessed, masochistic might be a better adjective.

Barry: you nuts, Rt 140!!!!!

What happened w/ the weather? I was wearing shorts this wknd in the mnts but this AM froze my ears off. Gotta pull out the winter garb.
