My lazy butt *might* make it to Layton's (ALL the way over on 16th and Philadelphia, LOL!) for breakfast on Sunday morning.

(The real answer -- I'm not sure! I haven't been doing much distance lately, I'll have to see how wiped out I am from the ride in on Saturday.)

Edited to add: Just saw the "beer and bike tans" option -- I like that! ;

Oo..oo. Gimme that numba too, Max.

BTW, I recently bought a mobile email/texting device. So, even though I'm still resisting the cell phone, I'm reachable while on the move.

As much as I love riding, I think sunday will be bike-lite for me. I'll ride down from Dewey stopping at every Dumsers on the way. If the day is nice, I might rent a Hobie Cat (sailboat) and go sailing in the bay. Oh yeah, then there's beer too.

You've got mail. :) Texting is cool, whatever works.

So you md guys seem to know whats goin on in md,

I want to start to get into some races and I noticed this one,

http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=8766

I know what a crit event is, but as far as the different races/classes im lost. Im assuming i cant ride in the senior class races being that I am 21. and the only mens race is a novice cat4 race. Does that mean I have to be a cat4 rider to enter? or just cat4 as far as us cycling goes. Im mostly in it for fun but I am going to give it my all and see how things go.

and help/advice/maybe another upcoming race that I can race in is appreciated.

You can race in the Senior V (CAT 5), but you'll have to purchase a one day license as well as pay the race fee.

You are not eligible to be in any race other than the CAT 5, since you don't have 10 mass start races in your race resume.

And, FYI, the older Juniors class is 15-18 years of age, so you are not considered a junior.

Okay thanks, why is it called a senior cat 5?

Ive yet to learn the lingo of the racing community lol

Senior because it's not Junior (under or equal to 18 years of age).

Men's CAT 5s are beginners as well as women CAT 4s. There are no Women's CAT 5. There's not enough women in the sport to warrant the extra CATegory.

Men CAT 4s are "Novice" as is Women CAT 3.

Junior is an age classification not a CATegory. Someone can be a Junior -and- a CAT 5, 4, 3, 2, or 1 depending on their talent, training, and years racing.

well i just registered, I have a usa cycling account and account number which i was able to use to sign up on bikereg and pay the fee. Is the one day license a common practice or should i make sure they are offering it there?

It's a usual offering--most of the time, but if you plan on racing several races who's one day licenses will cost you over $60, then you may want to get an annual license instead.

There's a fourth one who is saying that she is riding out from Easton--Esther from Team BBC. She's planning on riding to OCMD on Friday and leaving on Sunday.

So, four separate rides converging on OCMD by Saturday.

Saw some bikers this morning on the commute. One of them- was Barry! What a nice surprise.
He swung around to my side of the road, we chatted about his crappy job prospects and a possibility that he may have to leave town in search of better options.
:mad: :crash: :mad: :crash: :mad:

He decided to ride up to Owings Mills with me and we had an easy side by side ride up to my work.
Gotta be some way of getting Barry a state salary. He single-handedly does more than most of the other non-profits combined.

Yeah, pretty much. I'd need about a 6-hour head start on Isaias to do the ride from Essex :), and anyway I live much closer to the Bay Bridge.

Thanks for the support and kind words.

Morning rush hour for cyclists includes meeting and talking to other commuters, :love: those other forms of transportation do not know what they are missing. ;)

:twitchy:Hey Barry... like since Michael Jackson is gone, can't you ... like... take his job?:twitchy:

Oh, sorry, wrong Michael Jackson.

Btw, my countdown light at the intersection of Ridge Rd and Belair Rd is working again.

:roflmao2: I believe our Michael Jackson (with a 3 in his email address) has one of the top ten highest paying bike/ped positions in the country and I would dearly love his job but I doubt I would get it even though I think I could do a better job then him, but so could a whole lot of other people. :notamused:

FWIW When the state issued a press release for Maryland's honorable mention in LAB's Bike Friendly State Program. Another state bicycling advocate commented:

With a few edits, this would be worth sending to "The Onion"?
That inspired me to edit this section:

The League of American Bicyclists cited a number of specific efforts Maryland is making that made them stand out including:
- coordination with other states;
- reach and breadth of education efforts by Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), Washington Area Bicyclist Association and One Less Car;
- bike patrol certification;
- creation of a Director of Bicycle and Pedestrian Access position at MDOT;
- creation of popular Competence and Confidence adult bicycle safety video specific to Maryland ; and
- establishment of a 20-Year Bicycle and Pedestrian Access Master Plan that provides a detailed perspective from the State's vision of becoming the best State for bicycling by 2023 and the 66 action items needed to get there.
To:

The League of American Bicyclists cited a number of specific reasons why Maryland got this "close but no cigar" award and why they stand out including:
- Sends their State Bike Coordinator to other states but he keeps coming back.
- Reach and breadth of education efforts by posting stuff no one reads on the interweb.
- Creation of a Director of Bicycle and Pedestrian Access position to be included in the next revision of the Kama Sutra ;
- The most ancient and well preserved Bike Master Plan. "It's amazing how well preserved this document is, it is as if nothing has changed." - W. T. F. Bicycling Archeologist.

Bummer :( Any thoughts where you might be headed? When I think of all you do to promote cycling it is a shame you can't find a good position. You certainly do much better than most of the paid promoters. Barry, if you were in a different state (Ca, CO, OR) you and your work would have easily landed you a job.
The older I get the more conservative this state feels. Maryland has to be one of the most conservative blue states there is. I was just reading BBC forum and got so pissed off with the mentality of some cyclists. The whole NIMBY thing boils my blood. I was going to post but Janet yelled at everybody:rolleyes:

+100. Barry, I really hope we don't have to lose you. :(

I think the weird thing about Maryland is that our "righties" are not that many percentage-wise, but a lot of them are waaaaay righty. :)

I haven't read the BBC forum in a while, I'll have to go check out the latest rants.

Just got an email from Esther. She's calling off sick. She says she's not going to make it this time. I was sort-of hoping that maxine and Esther were riding somewhat the same course back and could keep each other company.

Thanks for thinking of us. :) I'll be fine. I was looking forward to meeting one of the "lady racers," though.
