I'll be heading out from Essex at about 5:30am, riding to the Starbucks at Mt Washington. My day looks like it'll be about 140 miles.

Healing is a curious balance of resting and pushing oneself. Anyway, it's not the miles but how long I push myself and no mater what I am still riding from home and back so see you at the fire house.

I am just happy to see some progress. Last week I went to James Joyce Pub, and parked on Central ave, but did not notice anything unusual. This week I went to the Lebanese Taverna in the same general area, but this week I noticed bike lanes down the length of Central ave from at least rte 40. Now maybe the suburbs will get going on some sort of plan.

On another note: Greta ride yesterday rando folks. I drove in today because......well, I was tired BUT not sore!! Bellona Ave, while long was doable. Last Rando ride we had Satyr Hill @ mile 99, and this time I had Bellona @ over 100 miles. Both tough finishes. I gotta say the last 20 miles were some of the least hilly terrain in N. Balto Co. Hope everyone made it home safely. @Dave: I'll get that money back to ya. Thanks @GB nice route, really enjoyed the rural dirt roads. I know they aren't for everybody but I loved them. I can't believe how you find them. |

Great shot Barry. Glad we all got back without incident. (although, I haven't heard fr. Ben. Did he get in okay?)
Max, tell me you were shadowing us the whole time. |

Barry: Great pix. Slow speed, been in the same position as you in the past. Probably will be there in the future.

My left foot has been off-and-on sore for about two weeks now; I don't know why, I don't recall any traumatic injury incident. It's on the top of the foot, sort of toward the outside. No bruises or anything, but when it decides to hurt, it's pretty bad. It's been a real pain in the neck at work, because I have to do so much walking (limping!) So, it seemed to be getting better, I did 20-ish miles on the bike Friday, no problems, no discomfort at all. On Saturday afternoon, in what is one of my annual traditions, I took my very non-Irish self to the Maryland Irish Festival with my good friend Bridget (who is more than Irish enough to make up for my lack.) It was a great time, as always, but I guess the 5-6 hours of mostly standing and walking around on the concrete floor wasn't the smartest move. By the end of the evening, my foot was a little sore -- not too bad. But when my alarm went off at 5:30 Sunday morning, my foot was swollen and quite painful. I spent most of the day popping Advil, with my legs propped up in the recliner. It's feeling much better today. Of course. |
I've got an action alert going on to get our bike laws updated by SHA (4 years out of date) and corrected by MVA (ride right unless a lane too narrow for a bicycle.)
Being nice about it for the last two years has not paid off on SHA's summary so complain. http://www.baltimorespokes.org/artic...01115163646706 |
What a sucky day for commuting. Everything is hanging up and drying out....for the 2nd time today. Hope tomorrow brings a little dryness to the world. I was a lucky man today. When I got to the train this morning I went into my little ritual of taking some lights from the bike, covering the seat with bags, trying to keep my stuff dry from the rain etc....I just forgot to lock up my bike....Still there after sitting in the rain all day:)
I'm on it Barry once I figure out what to write |

We missed you, Max. I tried to slow Ben down as we passed the area you said that you may 'intercept'. I kept a lookout, but to no avail. It's more important for you to find out what's going on with your foot. Maybe a doctor's visit is in order? You may have some internal bone thing going on, maybe? |
The big issue for me is the lack of involvement/communication that is sanctioned by the State. It's as if they pulled someone off the street and said make a bike law web page and then no internal review among State personnel who know the bicycle laws (not to mention no opportunity for public comment, no talking to OLC who worked with the 3' law, no outreach what so ever) and there is no official way from those that know that can "fix" the web page as it was not done within their department. (It seems there is an internal rule that one department can't criticize another, which is why I need I public outcry.)
There is a side issue as technically they can only do "guidance" so the wording of the law has to change but then they go and title it "Traffic Laws for Bicyclists" that has the wording intentionally different then the real law. And since the person writing this stuff does not fully understand the intent of the law it gets all messed up. IMHO this stuff has reached epidemic nonsensical proportions besides this junk we had MVA who admittedly can only give guidance, then interprets what the "law" says for cyclists by the guidance they give to motorists. |

It seems to be doing better again now. I'm thinking of an easy, flat ride sometime this weekend (perhaps on the NCR Trail? Haven't been up there in ages), see how things go. If I get another flare-up like the last one, I'll call the doc. |
Foot pain
I used to get pain on the tops of my feet as well. Sounds like you might need orthotics. I got a pair, for the first time at age 44, and they are wonderful. No more foot pain of any kind. Less lower back issues, too. They work to correct your stance and posture, as well as support your arches. See a podiatrist, they specialized in foot pain.:thumb:

+1 on orthotics. I have a set that a foot doctor (podiatrist?) made for me, and they are worth the money... some insurance will even pay for them.

Bike happenings
Been a while since I've posted here. I'm not sure if you're all on the Velocipede mailing list-but fun stuff tomorrow night. Anybody interested? Maybe get some brews afterwards-by bike of course. Built up my old/new freshly painted Cdale-seems to be pretty good, a couple hundred miles on it-but headset still seems loose.
Hey everyone, Fall is here and it's gorgeous outside! There's a couple of exciting announcements and events ahead… -This saturday (tomorrow) MICA is hosting a bike fest that is centered around a showing of "Life Cycles" a film that "tells a spectacular story of the bike, from its creation to its eventual demise. A visually stunning journey, with thought provoking narration, Life Cycles uses Ultra HD to document the many stories surrounding the mountain bike and its culture. Life Cycles is a celebration of the bicycle, and is sure to entertain anyone who has ever ridden one." Velocipede will be there to represent and there is a planned pre-screening ride, led by bmore fixed, that starts from the Washington Monument at 5:15pm There will be a goldsprint competition provided by Mobtown Velo as well as demonstrations by local bicycle shops such as Baltimore Bicycle Works and Twenty20! (http://micacycling.net/?p=205 for more info.) |
Hungover
I have the next Rando ride on my calendar. Problem is that there is a Xmas party night before-and I'm not know for watching my drinks. So, Barry please show up and go even slower than you mentioned-maybe my half drunk ass can grab your wheel.
Speaking of hangovers-I just got back from a few days in NY, rented an east village railroad flat from friend of a friend. The guy who I'm subletting from is serious cyclist, manages a team. He has a 56c Specialized Roubaix for me to use but we never get out-kicking myself. Reason I bring this up is because in order for this guy to ride, and he rides lots, is walk down four flights of very narrow stairs with bike-ride through the streets of NY, which can be fun, but to do any lengthy road rides he must ride up to and over the GW bridge and then he hits some long roads. Made me really appreciate being able to roll out the door and be passing corn fields in 30 minutes. |
Did my first real commute to Aberdeen this morning. Lots of traffic, more than I expected. It's a little hairy around the RT 152 interchange and Riverside Pkwy where each has a long RTOL. High speed motor vehicles are not used to seeing a bike traveling in the correct position for these RTOLs when it's dark out. I have my usual compliment of lights, reflectors on my new Camelbak and an orange high vis vest with reflective materials, too.

Pix: I'm thinking the Schwalbes didn't survive the nail? Schwalbe--I probably could have fixed it with ShoeGoo and Gorilla Tape, but I decided to junk it instead. I booted it for the ride home--pressure was likely about 60 psi for the trip home. |
