I'd love to join you guys sometime. But first off, I know I am not nearly fast enough yet. But mostly it would be an hour drive to get to where you start, which would make for a very early morning

I'll join you guys one of these days, but Sunday is full of kid taxi service, fall baseball, etc. It's going to be steamy so I hope you guys are okay.

I did my ride yesterday, 50 miles from my place near Towson up to O Ridge to Cuba to Stringtown to Cedar Ridge to Yeoho to Mt. Carmel back to Cedar Ridge and to Stringtown, basically tracing back to home, about 3300 feet according to my GPS. Won't even list speed, but only stopped for 20 minutes and I'm trying to eat as little as possible. My goal is to lose twenty by Dec 31.
On my return I found that my rear brake pad was rubbing slightly. Been having trouble with this wheel, two broken spokes in a month, one last week 29 miles into that century, rode the rest of the way with it tweaked. I think I'm just going to rebuild the damned thing.
Ave hr around 145
Max 171
kcal around 3300

Did my five mile run/walk on Friday, more running this time. The cycling muscles aren't getting along with the running muscles-yet.

yeah, I'll let noracer tell the story, but I'm ok. Nice long ride, maybe one day we can all skip work and ride, that away it doesn't take from family time, I don't know how well that works for everyone else.

Did SHE GOT BIKE today - the 40 (more like 42) mile route. Besides being quite warm, it was a great ride, well supported and had a nice turnout. Saw MANY riders on the road that were not part of the ride. Well, gotta make dinner for the gang.

My horror story is here:

By the way, Josh, I was down 6 pounds from this morning's weigh-in. That's a lot of water!

I need one of those water recycling suits from the book/movie(s) Dune.

That's what the GPS measured. Typically, the iBike comes in lower. It's too bad I lost what data I did have after losing the battery cap.

I am feeling better, but my voice is still sounding different--a indicator for me that I'm still not fully hydrated. My weight this morning was 155 pounds. Before the ride, I was at 160.8.

I'm taking some time off of the bike. Work is going to be stressful the next week or so. I need to control what stressors I can.

Ain't no shame in bagging it before full blown dehydration sets in, especially considering your experience with that. I can have a hard time staying hydrated and ever since doing this Death Valley Camp ride in Feb where I fought through cramps doing a 5000 foot climb, crawling up a hill, and then peeing the darkest, scariest pee ever, I take a bunch of Hammer Endurolytes, like two an hour, seems to help. We were melting at the baseball game yesterday, sweating profusely, and that's standing still. I was going to run but took the day off considering the humidity and especially the air quality. Way to go guys, had to be a tough one.

Thanks, Harry. Yes, I do have a history of not being able to stay hydrated in high humidity/high heat situations. I -really- need to do something different. I've been wanting to pick up some Endurolytes, but never seem to do it.

Josh seemed in great shape. I was thinking to myself that he should be the one wearing a Team BBC kit, not me. Hopefully, next year, he'll be giving it a try. He'll get to wear one of the black kits.

You can always just go to hammernutrition.com and order a bunch. I think Mt. Washington carries them as well. I can tell when sweat is cascading out of my helmet that I need to get some salt, otherwise I'm pouring it in and it's just leaking out. Sucks getting leg cramps, and by then it's too late.
You guys are way faster than me but hopefully I'll be successful in my weight loss and can actually race next season. I can avg 18mph at Montebello no problem but when the road turns up I lose my average.
Maybe I'll see you guys at Seagull, Teacher Bob says a bunch of bbc guys usually meet up. I may be using a fixie.

Looks like a great design. Link doesn't seem to work. Do you have a larger image? Couldn't find it on the team site.

any bigger pics of the kit or a link?

god, the wife will have a field day when I wear that.

Harry, you are on the team. You can get access to the Team BBC listserv. Contact Gary about the details. If you see Teacher Bob at Montebello, he may be able to guide you as well.

Anyway, the picture came from communications across the listserv.

Thanks Noracer, I met Gary early in the season and was on the listserv for a while. I'm determined to at least try racing next year, maybe try this cyclocross thing in the off.

NoRacer 09-16-08 06:22 PM

So, anyone else riding the PPTC Century (aka, Historic Backroads Century) on Sunday?

I signed up online by the 12th, so I could get a t-shirt this time (3rd year in a row).

Harry, I think that there's a cyclocross race in Druid Hill this sunday. Not sure where in the park it is. Chris Auer from Joe's is one of the organizers. I've been super busy lately, but I'll likely check it out early. Starts at 9AM

I'd like to do that PPC Century but my son has baseball at 1:30. I might just head down to the JFX event, log a few miles up and down the JFX and then on to baseball. I may try to ride out to the BBC ride on Saturday at Franklin Elementary in Reisterstown.

GB-I'll see if I can find info on that Cyclocross event. You going as a spectator or rider?

I'm there, and I'll get a t-shirt also..I tried to pry one out of them last year without pre-registering but they would'nt budge..I'll wear it proudly, I'm planning on doing the whole thing..The first section goes about 3 miles from my house. I ride those roads all the time. Nothing difficult at all. Looks as if the weather is going to be great...

Harry, here's their site: http://www.charmcitycycling.com/ (download the 2008 schedule)
Spectator only, but I'm interested in maybe trying some single speed cyclo this winter. i was planning on checking out these races and maybe meeting some locals who could show me the ropes. I honestly don't know much about it, but i'm interested. and very cool that there are races so near my 'hood.

I'm also thinking about the JFX riding. Did you know they are charging $5?! That really kinda turns me off. It should be public space and free access. IMHO

Right now, I'm leaning towards cyclocross early (9am) and maybe JFX. I'll keep my eyes open for the Black Madone.

Cool, Jeff!

If you see my Giant, give me a shout. I'll be riding with a BBC club member by the name of Janet. She'll be riding a Seven.

I don't think I'll be wearing my Team BBC kit. I've busted the zipper on the jersey, so I may be in Voler bibs and a Performance jersey instead (white or blue, I think).

Hey Bob, I'm with you, interested in knowing more about it. I may be on that Trek or possible the green 520 pulling my son in a trailer, not sure yet. Yah the 5 bucks, I figure it will go to a good cause.

Hey NoRacer, Janet G is a strong rider. We did the Flatland early in the summer, traded pulls for about eighty miles then I wilted. I see her at the lake on occasion, she's hard core.

She sure is.

She's doing her first double century weekend this weekend. She wasn't sure that she'd be up to the task, but I assured her that as long as she rehydrated, refueled, and kept controllable stressors as low as possible she would probably find herself even stronger on Sunday's century. Then, I asked her to remember that before dropping me. ;)

Josh, FYI - Apparently, the iBike retained the first part of the ride even after losing the battery AND being reset, Looks like they got smart and put ride data in non-volatile memory, which wasn't the case in the firmware version of the past.

Do you know what century Janet is doing on Saturday? I'm sure she'll have no trouble with back to back centuries, especially with a night of rest.

The PPTC Century data can be viewed here:

http://bimactive.com/ba/journal/post/10783/17475

Great weather, lots of people, very good support--I can't remember how many times I saw SAG vehicles on the road. Great coverage on their part.

brandenjs 09-22-08 09:29 AM

Very nice to meet you guys. I would have never guessed Janet would have ridden a century on Sat. the way you guys passed us coming down the final mile yesterday. I sure she slept good last night. This ride is very well organized and supported. Thumbs up to all the club members of the PPTC. I did the first loop of the full century (around 50 miles at an average of 17.7 mph), then met my wife back at the school and we did the quarter century loop together. She did very well after being sick last week. I ended up with just over 77 miles for the day. Great day...Jeff

Just wanted throw in a quick report on the CharmCity Cyclocross event in Druid Hill.

Wow. Very impressive. A huge turnout. Had to be at least 150 riders. The course was so circuitous and long that I could barely take in who was going where. It would be obvious for the individual riders as the course is laid out with plastic tape and posts. Some very tough local riders who I've ridden with on BBC rides were gasping for air on much of the race. This stuff is a serious workout.

Seeing a race up close got me so jacked up to try it that I went back to the course on monday and figured out the route by memory and by following the trampled grass. Rode it twice and had a blast.

Uh oh. I think I might have gotten hooked.

BTW Harry, if you're interested in meeting up there some time this week, I bet I could still figure out the route. i'd be up for riding it with you. I'm guessing it's about 1 mile long. Or maybe you went too?
How was the Rally for the River?
