Throw the stick!!!!
So far I have just done some races in the WVMBA (West Virginia Mountain Bike Association) Series. I have done Pipestem Challenge, Challenge at Mountwood, Big Bear Lake and Freewheeling MTB race at Winterplace ski resort. This weekend I will be doing the Tour de Lake, next weekend is Race the Trace. On June 18/19 I will be doing 24 hours of Big Bear on a two man team. Then the following weekend I will be doing the Appalachian Classic, the WVMBA fall series championship.
After that I will be doing the White Oak Challenge and the race at Little Beaver. Then in August I will be going to a five day mountain bike gathering at Slatyfork WV. Two weeks later is the NORBA race at Snowshoe WV on August 28th. Then my next and hopefully last race of the year will be the Black Bear race at Kanawha State Forest in Charleston, WV on September 18th.
I guess that makes a total of 11 regular races, one 24 hour race and one gathering. I may try to do one or two crits as well if I get time. Oh, I also want to go to Pisgah for a long weekend at some point.
Here is a link to the WV race schedule if anyone is curious. Clicky, clicky.

Since the BS that happend in BigBear I have only been to a few local races, missed the Otter this year (sucked!!) and probably will only be at a few of the locals the rest of the season. Already planning for next summer 'cause this one is a bust for racing.

Wow southern that does suck, I think I could have done it in 4 hours even.
Seriously though, anyone that has the kahunas to race downhill does not suck!

WOW, that sucks. Both for the rider and everyone else.
I do remember seeing something about it but nothing in detail. Thanks for the link.

final marking a few days before the race... but there are all those permanant metal markers, and the course hasn't changed. Aside from 1 newly fallen tree down in the wet'n'wild section, the course is race-ready. The tree will be gone Thursday evening. Let me know if you plan to ride Saturday - I'll bring the kid with all the hair out to ride with you.........

I probably won't be able to ride it until the weekend before the race. I''ve decided to skip the 24 hour race so I'll have that weekend free. That is my plan anyway. I hate to say it but I am going to be spending most of my time on the roadie for the next few weeks. I have noticed my endurance dropping some in the past couple of races and I have cramped up at both Spencer and Trace Fork. The way the WVMBA schedule has been this season it has been hard to keep my endurance up. It seems like as soon as you finish one race you have to take a couple days off or easy, then one or two rides then race again. The first season is almost over though. Just doing two WVMBA races during the fall season and the NORBA race. I'm ready to relax a little.
BTW, which long haired kid is yours? First name only of course.
I'm number 287 btw, Men's sport 18-34.

What do you think about the split season - better, worse?
Jr Sport Cai is my long haired kid - I'm sure you know him, as he's been racing WVMBA since he was 6...

Yup, know exactly who he is. He is heck of a rider. You didn't by any chance tell me that you met my sister-in-law while we were at Trace Fork race did you? If so I figured it out, it was my wife's sister. For some reason my brain couldn't figure that one out.
For me the split season actually works better. My family and I have a small business doing specialty foods (salsas, bbq sauces, pepper butter, etc) and I have to work a lot of weekends at arts and crafts festivals. We start getting busy here in a few weekends so I won't be able to do hardly any of the races after this month. What I am not particularly thrilled about is how they merged the Sport 18-25 with the 26-34 class. It's hard competing against the young guys that don't have the stresses of jobs and family.

Is anyone registered to race at the World Masters Games this July 22 in Edmonton Alberta? I'm so far good to go in the 50 - 59 age group; will be my 6th race in 6 years. Who'd have thought that doing my first race at 45 I'd be racing with guys from all over the world! I can't wait!!

Figured you know him... ok, and now I can place you, too! (hey - want to donate some salsa for the Classic prize table? - sorry - it's my "other" job to ask that!)
Why did WVMBA combine the sport classes? Mainly because turn out on the 19-25 group was low last year, and the promoters complained about the extra prize category expense for an average of 6 to 10 riders. Seems most of the '04 sport riders last year were in the 26-34 age group. So, they merged them back together this year. Same reason there's only 1 expert women's class, and only women's sport & sport vet. When more riders show up, then the race promoters can justify more classes.
I "collect" prizes for the Classic, and when you're talking about an average of $200 worth of stuff for places 1 to 4 in each class, you kind of need to have over 10 in a class to break even - even for a non-profit race. Most non-profits are designed to benefit something - in our case, the park - so extra classes actually eat into the donation we can make to the park, which the park commission folks don't like. When it comes down to a shop sponsored race, the numbers get even worse. It's hard to have leftover $$ in a local race.

I can donate a case of salsa (12 jars). Would that be alright?
Don't get me wrong, I know why they merged the classes, that doesn't mean I have to like it though.
But seriously, I'm not a top three racer anyway so it really doesn't have much of an effect on me. I have finished 5 out of 6 races in the top ten though which is much better than I had hoped for this season. I guess working my butt off during the off season really made a difference. On 12/1/05 I weighed 220 pounds. Right now I am right around 175.

Sugar Bottom Scramble, North Liberty, Iowa on Aug. 20th will be my first race. Still trying to figure out what to expect from an Iowa XC race.
