Advice on bike for new racer/high school age

My son has just started racing (NICA) on a Trek hard tail. I spent 400 on a used bike, upgraded pedals/tires etc. He will likely out grow the bike by next summer. He is 5'4 and 140 lbs. He will likely want a FS bike. I'm thinking he only needs a hardtail as the courses do not involve any jumps. Plus a HD will likely deliver a lighter bike with better components for the same $$ as FS bike. I plan on spending around 600 to 800

thoughts?

Hi Ginger Green,

I'm not mountain bike expert, but I have done one competitive race and have friends that race competitvely. I agree with your opinion: your son certainly doesn't need a full suspension bike at this time. Given that he could end up racing, or even just riding in the Ozark mountains, he could benefit from a FS bike. But, given the costs, it would be more economical to purchase one when he reaches his full height so he doesn't grow out of it and he can customize it over the years. Bike technology is always evolving, so he would certainly appreciate the latest technology in the future than the technology today.
