Hey everyone. I'm from Vermont, and just bought a 2005 Norco VPS A-Line. My goal to start racing, but definitely want to know what I'm up against. Im fairly new to Mountain biking but I do plan on getting a feel for my bike for a while before I start. I however, do not want to rush into it, because, let's face it, nobody like to get stomped . Any tips would be greatly appreciated including training, is my bike ready to tackle a good race or does it need changes, and any of your opinions on my goal. Thanks.

P.S. - I know the owner of my LBS, he races XC and is very good at it [Im aware I won't be racing XC]. He knows of most local races around here so I'm not worried about finding a place to race, just how to get started.

So what type racing will you be doing? That would be good to know in order to try to give you advice.

The best place to start is in the Begiinner class in your age bracket. There is no shame in this. Most NORBA races - and indies that pattern their format after NORBA - will have such a first-timer's class. If things go well, you will find that you are quickly outgrowing the class and can contemplate the jump to Sport. But don't get in a hurry - NORBA will require you to move up after you podium a certain number of times; and, hey, soak up the accolades a bit before moving up. Good luck!
