Isn't mountain biking in Florida an oxymoron?

This isn't the Florida you're thinking of. Go just a little bit southeast. You might have to swim a little bit. :p

All sarcasm aside, this race is in Florida, a town in Puerto Rico.

Exactly, the town of Florida is in the tiny caribbean island of Puerto Rico. We have hills not mountains but enjoy mountainbiking like everyone else around the world.

Don't be fooled by Florida, USA; there's plenty of good riding there too.

24 Hours of Florida Race Recap

This past weekend I participated on my second 24 hour mountain bike race. The race is held on a town called Florida and the course is mostly flat but very technical.

I took Friday off from work so I could pack and load all the camping and bike stuff before heading to Florida and Monday to finish storing all the stuff (didn't knew how much it was), do laundry and rest for the remainder of the day.

We (my son and I) arrived Friday night and prepared the pit stall and set up camp. Was nice to spend time with the kid alone. My wife, daughter and neighboor (who also raced) arrived early Saturday with the rest of the food. We prepared the bikes, registered and got dressed for the start.

We wore costumes just for fun and spice things up a bit.

After the LeMans start we took off. Jay and I were racing on the same class, Solo Singlespeed and were also sharing food, pit stall and support.

After 1 hour of racing a thunder storm passed by the area, heavy lightning was followed by a ~2hr period of heavy rain that flooded most of the course. The race was still on and we kept on riding on a course full of flowing water and in sections up to the bike bottom bracket. During that time the course was great, fast but a little slippery.

The rain went away and so did my desire and strengh, every lap was harder due to the amount of mud on the course and being picked up by the bike, some sections were unrideable and even walking was dificult.

As you can see from the pic I was drained after a couple of hours into the race. We kept on riding until we got drained, then took a long break and prepared for the night. Last year's night shift got real cold and to our surprise this year didn't.

This is how my bike looked after 1 night lap.

By morning the trail was almost unridable, the tires will dig into the mud making you work real hard to keep moving. I decided to walk most of each lap because of that and even that difficult.

I went out about 7:30am to try to squeeze a couple more laps but the trail was extreme muddy and unridable. Everyone was walking about 85% of the cours and the other 15% will take your energy away. I pushed my self to do 2 more laps and called it a day.

What is it about 24 hour races that inspires crazy costumes? At 24 hours of Moab I saw Elvis,a pixie,an entire team with penguins zip tied to their helmets but this guy takes the prize!! What was he thinking**********?
