...not (just) the bike, someone said. Need specifics on breathing, centering, body awareness while racing. Does one 'keep the blinders on' while ascending??? What is your technique??

You aren't going to want to hear it but the best way to learn these is thru experience. I honestly don't think anyone could have taught me how to do these things, it is all trial and error and eventually becomes natural. As for blinders, mine are always on while racing. I generally have no idea of what the scenery is like while I am in the middle of a race.

the breathing technique is very crucial to long distance riding. the best example is how they teach pregnant women to breath during the birth process. when your respiratory system is accellerated if your technique is proper you can lower your fatigue by taking deep breaths and concentrating on your form (your riding style/position) this total concentration will bring you a "second wind", better known to runners. this technique is best executed while extreme training, when you can push your limits without dealing with any negative consequences. you are correct in beleiving the biker is the most important factor in the performance equation, but you better put the most value in the operating capacities of your bicycles. it's the optimum performance between biker and bike working in harmony that will enable you to crush the competition. your riding form as a cyclist is very important and learning how to properly control your breathing while being aware of your form will epitomize your performance

i have heard/tried this: when breathing heavy open your arms a little. it helps with breathing. i did not see any major changes, but i didnt feel as. . . constricted(for lack of better words)
