Throwing in the towel
In my XC event yesterday I had to give up in the first two miles. I had been sick all Saturday night, vomiting and so on but when Sunday morning race time came I thought I felt okay. Turns out I was wrong. The legs had the power, so much that it surprised me, but the body would not cooperate.
My heart rate was peaking at 192 in the first climb which never happens unless I've been riding hard for a while. After the second mile I realized that I may not make it and that if I did, it would be at great expense to my health. I threw in the proverbial towel. I had to walk back down with the rest of the pack of 200 or so watching me as they climbed. It was rather humiliating. Especially as I have somewhat of a reputation as being a decent competitor.
Have you ever had to give up? What would you have done in this case? I'm just looking for justification.

Throw the stick!!!!
Congratulations on making the right decision. A lot of times our pride does us more harm than good. There are a few times this year I should have just turned around and just went home. Yesterday was one of those days. I actually got sick twice during the race but was still too stubborn to quit. As a result I coughed and hacked up crap all the way home and I am still doing it today.
