greenbrier challenge - maryland

I raced the sport 15-16. 11 miles with 1470 feet of climbing. I got second and qualified of mt. snow, Vermont . After my race I was looking at my bike and there was a hole through my tire and the tube was sticking out ,I felt very lucky. What really sucked was I had to sprint with some kid for second place, first time that ever happened .

Congrats! Our team was debating about doing that race, but we opted for a more local race - the O-Hill Meltdown at University of Virginia.

Again, good job and I'll see you in Vermont this summer!

It was a really long weekend; we got up early Saturday to rainy, overcast weather, and set out on the 5 1/2 drive to Greenbrier State Park. The sun finally started to peak through here & there as we headed east, and by the time we arrived, it was actually sunny! Salsa set up the tent & went to pre-ride, came back covered with a white looking mud. When he dashed off to wash his bike, some UCI official threatened to suspend his license for riding his bike without a helmet. (Is there some new reg that requires a lid at all times?!?)

Anyway, as the afternoon wore on, the sun wore out, and the rain began again - lovely camping weather! Out campsite overlooked a rocky section of the race trail, so we sat in the rain & watched Jeremiah Bishop show a bunch of riders how to deal with slippery rocks. That was fun.

Sunday morning was chilly & sunny - the Marathon racers were already out on the course by the time we got moving. The beginners went off at 9 or so, and Salsa was scheduled for line up at 10:30. He went off to a strong start - it was interesting watching the marathon riders loop through & have to cross in front of the starting sport riders in order to get to their feed zone - lots of hollering going on there! While all that was going on on, the UCI official at the feed zone was so busy scolding a person for running to hand off drinks that he almost backed right into an oncoming racer - the racer saw him & screeched to a stop.

We didn't stay for the end of the Pro race or start of the Experts; Salsa picked up his 2nd place medal & prize, and we hit the road around 3 - the awards were supposed to be at 1:30, but got held up for whatever reason. Salsa got scolded again by the same helmet policeman - he was standing by his bike (helmet on the bar) waiting for his award, yet this guy needed to tell him if he saw him on his bike without the helmet he would yank his license. I have to wonder about this & check the rules....

BTW - the crash hat rule is true. Not sure if they can take your license away though - I thought it was DQ for that race only.
