6/17/07 Appalachian Classic
OK, Call this shameless advertisement!
Appalachian Classic Mountain Bike Festival & 5K Run, June 16th & 17th at the Calhoun County Park near Grantsville WV: https://www.appalachianclassic.com
Free primitive camping at the park, which is one of the top 10 rated stargazing spots on the East Coast! (ok, well, it's because there is no ambient lighting because, well, nobody lives here... but, whatever...)
Saturday, 6/16/07 - @10 a.m. there will be a 5k trail run
@ 2 p.m. Kids Race (4 age specific courses for the under 12 set; bring your big wheels, trikes, 12" wheels, whatever.... 6 & under class, 7&8, 9&10, 11&12 classes. Lots of fun!)
@ 4 p.m. Infamous Pond Jump - ride down a hill on our specially modified junker bike - no brakes, but swathed with floater foam - off a ramp, and into the pond. Volunteer judges grade on height, style, & splash.... questionable prizes.
@ dusk - free local entertainment (probably heavy on the bluegrass - the area boasts some nationally known BG artists & fiddlers) - donations acepted, though.
Sunday, 6/17/2007 @ high noon: 11th annual Appalachian Classic MTB Race - 10k, 20k, 30k depending upon class. $35 non-WVMBA members, $30 WVMBA members.
Race bags for registrants include: 1st 60 registrants $75 3/4 zip jersey from pyroapparel, 1st 100 registrants receive a race t-shirt. Maxxis Huggies until they run out, and whatever else we have!! Not a bad deal for $35!
Prizes in all classes to at least 5th place, plus post-race meal. This is a WVMBA sanctioned event (6th Point Series race). 100% cash payback for Expert classes (men's open, Women's open, Vet Expert, Master Expert, Junior Expert, Single Speed Open).
Fastest male & female sport class 2 lap racers will receive an ACE ADVENTURE White Water Rafting Trip, in addition to their race class prize.

Throw the stick!!!!
It is an awesome weekend. The course is awesome, the people are the nicest you could ever meet. To me it is the best race in the series. If anyone is the least bit interested then I highly recommend going. Oh yeah, the prizes are awesome as well.

Nope, I won't be able to make it. My dad's 70th birthday is the day before the race and then fathers day is the day of the race. My sister is going to be in from Myrtle Beach and my brother is coming in from Charlotte and bringing his little boy. I'll be spending the weekend with all of them.

Picked up about $2000 worth of prizes today for the race - add that to what has been donated, and I can easily say $3,500 in prizes, not counting the Expert 100% cash - back prize thing. So, if you're in the neighborhood, a $35 entry fee is nothing for this race:
1st 65 registered riders get a $75 3/4 zip jersey
1 st 100 riders get a Race T-shirt
1st 65 registered riders get a $75 3/4 zip jersey
1 st 100 riders get a Race T-shirt

All riders get a great race, free post-race pasta meal, and prizes will go at least 5 deep.
Prize order at the Classic is as follows: all 1st place winners are called up, recognized as a group & set free on the prize table; Expert riders winning cash can place thier cash on the table & pick a prize instead. Same thing for each other place... so everyone gets the same shot at prizes. We award until there is nothing left.
There is a Park Tool repair stand that Salsa has his eye on.... I'll make sure it gets to the race!!

The race went off well... despite the race director. 111 registered, 110 raced ( one poor guy destroyed himself on the "Power Slyde" between registering & race time & didn't race). The course was well groomed & super dry, and Gunnar Shogren set a course record for the Expert Class - racing Vet Ex (35+) but on a SINGLE SPEED! Check out the pics & results on www.iplayoutside.com.
Be sure to click on the kid's race photos to see Salsa paying dues - leading the kids around & letting them catch up, etc., just like Gunnar did for him at Salsa's 1st kid's race!
Check out the pond jump pics, too... it was a 90+ day & those kids cooled off with an audience.
