Noob getting into moutian bike racing

Ive been ridign road for about half a year now in the off season and raced one cross race on my mountain bike. But my true joy is mountain biking, but now I want to get into racing I think the season starts in march and I was wondering if my 2001 trek 4500 is I was thinkign about upgrading it Im thinking flat bars in clip in pedals but im clueless I was lookign at a set of rimms but i found them like $500 I know in road bikes that will get you a great wheel set. right now my budget is $200 ( great......yeah) because thats all I have.
