Raleigh - Urban Assault - Can't Figure Out The Year

Good day All,

I'm extremely new to cycling and wanted to find an older bike I could update to my liking and if it turns out to be a failed trial, I wouldn't be out too much money (terrible reasoning I'm sure). So I picked up what looks to be a Raleigh Urban Assault Mountain Bike. I've been racking my brain trying to figure out what year it's from and I'm completely vexed. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Found what looks to be a serial number on the bottom: M8LJ42321

80's? (additional pics of the whole bike might help - unable to make out shifters, derailer, etc.) and really take time to do the math before spending any money on it...
Honestly it's maybe a $40 bike where I live... so do the math... you may want to spend $100 (easy) on upgrades...
but instead maybe just buy a used bike for $150 with your upgrades plus...

Perhaps you might just ride it as is and then save up and figure out what you want in your next ride!
All the best!

Thank you so much for responding, I really appreciate it. I'll add a few more pictures to help out.

That may be very sound advice. I don't know much about bikes, but I have this weird fetish for taking old things and bringing them back to life/updating them and building things in general. For me, the fun is in the journey just as much as the ride itself. My only issue with this bicycle is it's a bit heavy and yes I can stand over the top tube but it's a bit close. I'm wondering if I should abandon this challenge altogether, but we shall see.

You have answered your own question there, the bike doesn't fit, so there is little point in proceeding with a bike what won't be any good for you when finished.
