cross bike on trails

I'm a roadie, and I'm building a touring bike with igh (alfine 8). I figure it would be really cool if I can use this bike on the trails too, provided I can find a proper cross frame that's also really durable.

Can you guys help me point out the pros and cons of mtb vs cross frames? I'm only doing trails so I can hang out with friends who does mtb, improve my bike handling skills, learn how to bunny hop like a boss, and potentially gain skills that will help me avoid crashes in road racing. what types of terrain are unsuitable for cross bikes?

the reason why I don't really like getting a mtb just for mtb-ing is because I don't want to have a bike that doesn't get used. I believe most trails are relatively smooth, and can be traversed with a cross bike that has almost no suspension, right?

also, my alfine 8 is 135 spacing, which is hard to find for cross frames. anyone happen to know a good cross frame that has 135 rear dropout spacing? I'd rather not file down threads on a perfectly good hub.

how about this:Nashbar Cro-mo Cyclocross Frame

better idea: drop bars on a 29er MTB frame. then you can run anywhere from a 29x2.3 to 700x40 to even 700x25 if you're sadistic.

that steel frame looks heavy as hell though. dengfu just got back to me saying their cross frame is $460, and has 135 rear spacing. I don't know if I like the idea of touring on a carbon bike though, or commuting on a carbon bike..

I just got this - it's a Litespeed T5G. Does really well on single track, and feels super fast. However it is not a mountain bike, so trying to keep up with someone on a mountain bike could be frustrating

Soma Double Cross or Soma Wolverive
Double Cross | SOMA Fabrications
Double Cross Disc | SOMA Fabrications
Wolverine | SOMA Fabrications

Van Dessel WTF
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot - Van Dessel

there are others too. I have a Double Cross, but have been lusting after a Wolverine or WTF for monstercross tire dimensions.
