Crankset Recommendations?
 

I have recently become interested in mountain biking and went on my first longish ride the other weekend. My chain started falling off and after a frustrating number of times, I finally noticed I had severely bent all three chainrings of the SR Suntour XCT V2 crankset and my bike was actively betraying me by throwing the chain off. I would like to know your opinion on what crankset I should replace it with. Obviously I could just buy the same one because the Suntour lasted me through probably 2 dozen shorter rides, but considering my weight (~275 lbs) I think it might be a good idea to upgrade to a stronger crankset. I don't really know anything about mountain biking or bike parts so any advice you could offer would be great. I would like to stay around 50-75$ but if there is something significantly more durable at a higher price I will definitely consider it. Thanks

Do you actively use all three of the front chainrings? I mean, do you REALLY shift between them because you need them, or can you get what you need out of, say, the middle one, and just use your rear derailleur to get the speed/torque you need? If so, then I would recommend just putting one chainring up front and not have an option to shift. Simplifies things both mechanically and mentally.

I just sort of went through this with my 1x10 (one gear up front, ten in the back), and went with a RaceFace Narrow/Wide 32T chainring. The Narrow/Wide black magic just flat out keeps the chain on there. My post is still on the front page. Check it out for details. $48 shipped to my door, I think.

Thanks for responding! Yes I do actively use all three front chainrings because I ride the bike to the trails. The best trails are a 7 mile one way ride from my house so have the larger gears is a big help.

I was using a 2x10 Deore M615 Group set (24/36 front chainrings). I just changed it out after stripping the crank arms to a RaceFace Ride XC Crankset with a 32T chainring and have not seen any major different when riding on the roads. I do however feel it on the trails currently and still need to get use to it or get a new 40/42T gear for the rear.
