Sponsors?

Hey all, I was wondering if any one on this baord was sponsored by any kind of biking or bike clothing company? What all do you have to do to be sponsored by these companies? Is it hard? I am really interested in this so anyone with information please help me out here.

It originally was through hockey, the last two years have been snowmobiling, but at the end of this year I am out of competative sledding, so this will be the end of it, unless I shoot a movie this winter, but don't have any plans, but you never know the Turnagain Hardcore boys are fun to shoot with.

I got a low level sponsorship deal with Gray's for squash because I won a tri-series event. I got discount on a raquet basically. I don't have any official sponsor ship deals for riding, but my LBS REALLY looks after me becasue I am a really loyal customer and send people their way all the time. So I get discounts, upgrades in services lots of little things.

I'm sponsored by Huffy and Walmart.

Ok, not really, I have small deals with Kona, Maxxis and SIC Components.

yeah, being sponsored would be pretty sweet. How did you guys get your sponsorships. Did you mail them asking or did they see you performing and ask you?

Have connections with Kona and SIC, so that was easy, Maxxis will sponsor you if you have put in a positive contribution in the mtb community.

SPY Optics was all about connections, as most low end sponsorship is like that.

Is it true if you, for example, make a video of yourself cycling and send it in through the LBS to Fox or Kona or whoever, and they really like it, then they'll sponsor you? O_o Interesting topic.

You would be surprised how easy it is to get sponsored. There are several ways

a) be a good stylie rider and get coverage (huckers aren't getting much play but if they could get coverage)
b) be a good racer and get coverage
c) be a producer and get lots of exposure

a and b can work with c to help each other. But in the end (c) needs to be good at marketing and getting exposure. Without a good (c), (a) and (b) are useless. I have friends in (c) and (a). (c) gets a lot more free stuff 'easier' than (a), all on the promise of a movie. If and when this movie gets out things might explode. The movie guy has to do very little to prove himself, one failure and you are screwed. The rider has to work his butt off to convince everyone he/she is good enough to bother exposing.

In all of this, the best riders (of a and b) don't always get the contracts. I know some incredible riders but either they don't want it (sad) or they stink at public relations and their skills don't overpower that attitude.

This is how I see it as all of my friends (ok not all but at least 80%) are sponsored by someone (btw I am not refering to shops, these are real industry sponsors). I have second tier sponsorships for side work I do with them but nothing worth mentioning. These are based on work done, not because I ride.

As an example of rider hardship. I know 1 guy, unreal rider, as good as ANY pro I have seen ride, he is a freerider and a dh racer. He has gone three years being overlooked by companies (he was sponsored by Whistler though). He finally got a good (c) and made a great 5 minute movie of himself and his portfolio. Within a week he was partially sponsored by Kona at last years interbike.

hey there Kona rider, by possitive contribution to the mountain bikec ommunity would building small trails and getting younger guys into riding count? There are alot of little cyclists on my street that have gotten fairly into because of watching me and enjoying seeing me do things. I made a very small, but fun little trail system in our back bush with little baordwalks and jumps and things, and envite people I see riding in town, and there friends to come out there riding with me.
Do you think things like that would count?
