Rohloff hub?

Anyone using this hub for their bikes?

Rohloff Disc-Speedhub 500/14 TS/DB, B-O 32h red, Hubs

It is very expensive to do away with a derailleur!

Bikes: Lots

My wife has one in her Rodriguez Dutch-style travel bike, and it is a delight. Shifts well, has plenty of gears for most of us, is reportedly durable as you could want.

Do you have a specific concern or is it the price that bugs you?

Hmmm,

Nearly $600 cheaper on E-Bay from Germany

Rohloff Speedhub 500 14 CC DB 8025 8026 8027 14 Speed Internal Gear Hub Disc | eBay
Rohloff Speedhub 500 14 TS EX 8050 8051 8052 14 Speed Internal Gear Hub | eBay

(and the store in Germany)
Rohloff Naben und Teile - Heli-Bikes

Other sources?

I'm not quite sure all the different models? The German sources seem to give a color choice, and have an option for a disc. Other options?

Ahhh, the options are listed on the Rohloff page.

Also consider the Shimano Alfine 11 for quite a bit less.

At least the weight is at the hub, should not be too bad on spin up.

Being able to shift while stopped is cool..

I have one, it's a terrific bit of equipment. Absolutely bulletproof, maintenance free apart from an oil change every few thousand miles, precisely even steps between gear ratios. Slight delay in shifting between gears seven and eight as it moves between the two planetary systems, otherwise very smmoth and you can shift right down the box while stationary, which is surprisingly useful.

Is it worth the money? Depends on the sort of riding you do and what you want, I guess. But it's impressive.

As far as the expense... yes.

But, consider a Dura Ace Groupset starts at about $1200. A Di2 Dura Ace is over $2000. Likewise, a Record EPS system is over $3000.

The Shimano Alfine system (7, 8, 11 spd) is quite a bit cheaper. So, yes, the Rholoff may be comparable to Dura Ace or Record. Heavier, yes, but perhaps comparable quality.

I think a traditional derailleur is simpler and more efficient, I would not use it on my road bikes for sure!
It looks so complex inside, and if there is a problem you are stuck as it is not a DIY system!
Not seen any in use and there must be a reason beside the price?
Although Shimano would be the way to go if I were to use one!
