Bike choice advice/opinion

I'm looking at a '15 Kona Kahuna DL and a '15 Cannondale Trail 1. I'm new to 29ers. I prefer a hardtail. These are the two bikes I've narrowed down in my price point at my LBS. Both are quite similar as far a components go. Does anyone have any opinions, thoughts or experiences with either.

Hopefully these links work:
KONA BIKES | 2015 BIKES | XC RACE LIGHT | KAHUNA DELUXE

https://www.evanscycles.com/cannonda...-bike-EV214104
(this is the best site I could find with specs for the Trail, as cannondale doesn't have specs for 2015 bikes)

Thanks.

I would accept other bike suggestions, also.

I would go with the Kona. The 15mm front axle is MUCH better. IMHO, the wheels and tires are also better on the Kona.

Biggest difference I saw was 20- vs. 30-speeds. 20 might be enough, particularly if you plan to race or ride really fast all the time. 30 would be more for longer rides where you might be tired late in the day and need help getting up those last few steep climbs, IMO. Otherwise, pretty similar bikes, it seems. The Kona does appear to have stronger wheels .... trying to guess looking at the component list. Thicker spokes, what could be better rims .... but maybe heavier and not much stronger.

The good news is that either bike is a winner, so you can't lose no matter what yo end up going home with.

+1. The choice to go thru-axle is a no brainer. The traditional quick-release-skewer design is a dead-end on mountain-bikes. You want 15mm QR like on that Kona. Don't accept less than that.

I'm definitely leaning toward the Kona. Thanks for the input.
