Roadie goes back to MTB

So I'm a roadie looking to get back into the dirt. I've been looking at several bikes and I think I have it narrowed down to two: '05 Specialized FSR xc Comp and '04 Klein Palomino X. Not sure which to get, they have their trade-offs. The specialized is slightly cheaper ($100 plus no sales tax) and I ride a specialized road (Allez Comp) that's rock solid, so I know they make good products. But the Klein seems so nice. Any opinions? Doing XC stuff, trail riding, not downhilling. There are so many damn choices ...

Welcome back to the dark side! [evil] But my thoughts would be to go with specialized, you know the company, you ride one of their bikes so you'll know what to expect. Plus, it's a great bike.

I'd go with the specialized. Klein bikes are pricey and I think one reason is the meticulous detail in the decals and paint job and such. On a road bike, maybe, but your mtb would end up all filthy anyway so whats so great about a nice paint job?

Thanks for the input - went with the Klein anyway because it just felt like a nicer ride (much better fork too, IMHO). It also had better components, but no disc brakes. Will have to upgrade later if I feel the need for em.

I went out on the local trails today and promptly managed to break it in by falling without unclipping during a very steep, gravel-ridden uphill. Road riding with clipless is easy - mountain biking with clipless pedals takes a little more confidence

I shall forever despise you for not taking the advice of a random guy on the internet.
But if it felt better to you then I suppose its the right bike. What kind of pedals are you running on it I'd recomend some Time's or eggbeaters? I'll agree its tougher to clip out when moutain biking. Never tipped over on my road bike. Done it twice on my mountain bike.
