clipless pedals and jumping logs

Hey all, i'm new to the sport of mountain biking and have only been riding for the past 2 weeks (probably rode a good 10 times already though). I spoke with a friend of mine who's really into it and he told me i should get some clipless pedals. So the other day, i did.

now here's my problem. i've only been out on the trails using the clipless pedals twice so i'm guessing i just need more practice with them, but both times i've been out, i've spilled pretty bad trying to jump logs in the middle of trails because i couldnt disengage my foot fast enough if i lost balance. my friend told me i should bunnyhop the logs since it's easier with the clipless pedals. my question is, does anybody else have any recommendations as to how to go about going over logs with the clipless pedals and not losing balance and stuff.

i dont have a problem clearing the smaller logs (6-8" or shorter), but the bigger ones, ill get a pedal stuck, or i dont go over them fast enough, or something...but it really sucks to fall

thanks all.

Work on your balance.

I used to have super-crappy balance, whereas now I just have average balance

Do stuff like lift your front end from a reallllly slow roll, kick the pedals, and then lift your rear over/onto the curb/log. Practice trackstanding, etc.

You'll get better with time and practice, if you're riding cross country, you'll be glad you went with clipless - and will get to the point that getting out of the pedals is a natural movement.
