Can I add a suspension fork to my hybrid (non-suspeniosn) MB?

Hey guys,

I have a Giant Toughroad SLR 29er (non-suspension) with Shimano SLX and Stans ZTR Arch EX wheels. I'm a roadie but sometime do cross country riding with friends who ride hard tails and full suspension MB's. The bike does really well except on fast descents on bumpy roads. Is it possible to add modest front suspension forks, preferably used and around $300, on this bike? Pic and specs of my below.

It will handle poorly..the fork suspension area will raise the front end up..100 mm plus..Thus slackens the bike taking weight off the front making you very likely to wash out in corners and back flip on climbs..also the frame will be over stressed by this possibly breaking while riding...

If your going to put suspension on that, would be looking for a mid-high end fork, rather than a entry level you seem to be, which would put it out of your price range.

Thinking that you would be better off looking at larger tires than you currently have, as they look pretty narrow, or run tubeless (you say you have the rims, not that you are running tubeless) with a lower pressure with what you have.

The bike does look nice/well proportioned as is now.

:rolleyes: Oh for pity's sake. we're not talking putting an 8" dual-crown on it.

OP - - You should be just fine, as long as you stay reasonable. We did that for my wife's hybrid a few years ago - - using a leftover RockShox Judy we had laying around. Smooth out the dirt roads and buff singletrack I drug her onand still working fine. Look for a fairly short-travel fork; but, still, a degree or two of slackened head-angle is not going to set the earth off its axis or anything.

That bike was designed for a rigid fork. You won't find a 29r fork worth having with an axle-to-crown measurement that doesn't rake up the front end and slacken the head angle. That will affect how the bike handles.

Then you have to worry about clearance of the fork under the top tube. Suspension forks are wider and may contact the down tube when you turn (this used to be an issue with 29rs) Looking at that frame it may be an issue with some forks.

And if you use it primarily on the road, are you going to lock up the fork most of the time? Some forks are sensitive to that.

To summ it up: yes, you can do it but it isn't a good idea.

Don't know for sure but this might work.

RockShox updates suspension fork for 700c adventure bikes

The disc version is 65mm travel. It's air sprung which is nice to have instead of a coil spring. Remote lockout which is also nice. I think the maximum tire size is 45mm which isn't great but should be okay for roads. Looks like the remote lockout version may not be available just yet, but there are non-remote versions available now. It's not a fork meant for gnarly off-road use, but if you're just wanting to reduce the beating from washboard roads or occasional potholes, it would probably do a pretty good job with that.

Like I said, I don't know for sure if it would work, but maybe an email to Giant would answer that.

Since I happen to have the same bike. The axle-crown measurement on mine ~426mm, which will be tricky to find in a 29er fork. Realistically, there are options such as a 26 or 27.5in fork, but that would also mean new wheels.

Having said that, realistically, raising the front end ~100mm will change the head tube angle by approximately ~5 deg. The Toughroad is relatively steep at ~72deg, so that would put in the ~67deg range which is where the slack 29ers are. You're going to have some front-end lift issues on climbs, handling may suffer some, but I don't see it being totally un-workable.

Scroll way down to get to the 29er section. The 80mm forks are around 480-490 which shouldn't be too bad. The other problem is it looks like you have straight steerer while tapered is the norm now. You may have to go used.
