Quick Question - Brake Disc Compatibility
HI All,
I just got a Felt Virtue Sport, which has WTB SX-17 rims on the front. However the bike came with a 24" rear wheel with huge tyre, which i would like to replace with something close to, if not identical to, the front wheel. The rear wheel has a Shimano FH-M475 rear hub, with 6bolt disc mounting. The brakes are Tektro Draco hydraulics. Can i get this rear wheel (in Czech since i'm living over here): Wheel Here which has centerlock and use a disc like this Disc Here? Will it work with the Tektro brakes? Are discs basically compatible as long as the rotor size is the same? Thanks a lot in advance for any information or advice! :) |
As long as the disc rotor diameter is the same, it should work. With a new wheel, you may need to re-align the caliper, but a 160mm disc is a 160mm disc (assuming yours is a 160mm disc). There are other disc sizes too, like 140mm, and 180mm. I've not seen anyone go through the trouble of installing a 203mm rear disc rotor.
Just keep in mind that your rotor from the 6 bolt mounting cannot be mounted to the wheel with the centerlock. |
Yes the brakes should work with almost any rotor that will attach to the hub. Another option is to get a Centrelock adaptor like this one: THIS, and mount any 6 bolt rotor, although I have no idea what is available in the Czech Republic... I imagine that you can get stuff from other EU countries pretty easily.

I have a bike with Draco brakes and Shimano CenterLock rotors. It works perfectly. The cheaper Shimano rotors are for resin pads only. I avoid those. The ones that work with metallic pads will also work with resin pads.
