Road tires?
 

Hi all,

My off road riding days are done. I now ride my Trek 930 on the road and very light trails The roads I ride on are mostly crappy asphalt with some major hills. I usually average about 10 + mph for a two hour ride. I want to increase my range and average speed. I don't want a road bike or skinny tires. What would be the best tire for me.

Check out Maxxis Hookworms. I've ridden with a fellow who uses those on his mountain bikes for city and casual group rides around town at a 10-12 mph overall pace. He likes them, no complaints.

I'd go Schwalbe Big Apple or Fat Frank.

Maxxis Hookworms are nice and bombproof but their tremendous weight would suck on the major hills you plan to hit.

Kenda K-Rad 1.95, a great non-knobby tire. Just enough tread for grass and sand patches and such, not enough to slow you down or buzz on the pavement. Usually available for not much money at all. Wears well and I've never flatted one in many years.

Kenda Kwick is a decent tire also. Kenda has a few urban MTB tire types.

I put 26x1.5 Bontrager H2s on my 1999 Trek 820 MTB this summer and like them. I am riding primarily on asphalt multi-use trails, but I also take it on one packed gravel trail. Compared with the 1.95" wide knobbies that were on the bike previously, I ride about 2 MPH faster and push 1 or 2 gears higher over the same course. The ride is much quieter on pavement, as well.

Thanks for all the help. Now I have to go shopping at my local bike shop. My rear tire is flat.

Check out the other Schwalbe tire, the Big Ben. I use 'em on my 29'er,...

"Gravel tires" is the class of tire to look for, they range style from slick to teeny knobbies and size from 32mm-47mm or so.
