Brake pad question
 

Hello everyone,

Last night I did my weekly inspection/cleaning of my bike and I decided to take a look at my brake pads (the first time I have done it since I got the bike about 3 months ago). When I looked closely at the pads I noticed little pieces of metal in the rubber (which still looks very thick and not worn out). Is this normal? If so then what is it? Is it part of my rims? Is it something that the company puts in the pads?

It's normal. Rims will wear down, although very, very slowly over time. The tiny fleck of metal you see are coming from the rim. Nothing to worry about, though you can sand them out carefully if you braking performance starts to go south.

Actually, a lot of brake pads have little flecs of metal embedded in the rubber to help with braking performance. It's normal. Don't worry, go ride!

Standard fit brake pads are very hard and have a habit of damaging the rims. Try some Koolstop or Fibromax brake pads. They don't damage your rims and they improve braking performance to boot. They probably wear a little faster than standard pads But mine are lasting well.
