Bike Forums - Which bike and why

Specialized RockHopper or a GT Avalanche 2.0. I'm also considering the Trek 4500. I like em all and like the way they ride but I'm having a hard time deciding which one is a better bike.

I'm new to the forum and used to ride BMX. GT was my bike of chice then but they seem to have lost some respect. Specialized is new to me and Trek was a high end road bike company from what I remember. I was a BMX freestyle rider back in the 80's. Now I want a nice mountain bike for on and off road use with the family and fitness.
