any fat guys from so cal want to ride?
Im a fat guy looking to get a new bike...my only worry is everybody I know who rides is 160lbs and rides 5 days a week. I race dirtbikes offroad and work out semi regularly but my endurance on a bike without a motor is lacking big time...my girlfriend who hardly can ride a bike smokes me on any jaunt we take.
So im looking for some big outta shape guys in so cal (im in san dimas) who like to ride at a slow to moderate pace in the evenings. I dont like holding up the pack or having people wait because when im play riding on my dirtbike I hate waiting up.
I am currently on an unsuspended trek 8000 from 1992...it is old and tired and im looking for a new ride. It seems the kona hoss dee lux is the bike to get for us big guys...
Any feedback would be great.
Short term goal is to get a new ride and ride 15 miles per week...3 miles 5 days or 5 miles 3 days per week.
My long term goal is to get into a 36 inch pant by april 06...im in 46 inch pants now.

I'm a big guy too at 265 and looked at the Hoss myself. Its a nice rig and in comparison to the bike your on now you'll love it. I opted for FS just to smooth out some of the rough singletrack where I normally ride. If you opt for that route check out the Dawg as its in that price range and can be set up for a "clydesdale". Good luck on the weight loss. I'm down 20lbs since the 1st of Feb. and hope for another 35 or so.
As far as a cardio/weight loss workout I'd recommend the 5 day per week routine or if you ride for 3 days, do something else cardio-related for a couple of other days. An easy rule of thumb to remember (and not the most scientific) is that the 1st 20 minutes you're burning glycogen (carbo stores) and after that its fat burning so shoot for 30 minutes at least. That's one thing I like better about my bike is that I can ride a lot longer than I can run, stairclimb, elliptical train, etc.

I am just a noobie, but thought I would give you my $.02. I also don't know anything about your bike, this might be totally off the mark.
My wife and I had some hybrid bikes from 10-12 years ago. She got into doing these sprint tri-athalons and I went out and bought her a decent bike. Although it is classified as a comfort bike, it seems to be set up more for training.

well I got my 12 year old shwinn out one day, had the LBS give it a tune up and we set off for an easy 10 mile flat paved bike trail ride and she dropped me like I was standing still. Now I knew I was growing out of shape, but I was really frustrated that I could not keep any momentum going.
A few weeks later I bought a new bike.

Although it is not a lightweight road bike or a an XC trail bike, I can pump out 6-10 miles no problem and I can keep up with her.
I am not saying you should rush out and get a new bike, but just don't let yourself get frustrated by that '92 bike. For me, having a decent bike made a world of difference. The old bike felt like I was draggin an anchor!

I live down in the OC now and I'm not exactly a "fat guy" (although I'm definitely bigger than a lot of MTBers...mostly from spending time in the gym) but I can suggest a couple of places to ride out there. Give Marshall Canyon a shot (the entrance is at the top of Mills road) for some half-way decent riding or Bonelli Park for some short trails. Your best bet however, would be to jump on the 57FWY south for about 10 miles, exit Lambert Road, go east and cruise through Carbon Canyon (Telegraph Road trail) a couple of times. You're bound to meet other riders who are about your skill level/size on that trail (it gets pretty packed with newbies on the weekends) and it's one of the best beginner trails I know of or could possibly imagine.
It's a 12 mile, up-and-back ride (to the "four corners" at least) that you can cut off at any point. The six miles in is all a gradual climb with the entire return trip a gradual descent. Start out doing 3 in for a workout with 3 back for fun and build from there. Good luck and, perhaps, I'll see you out there one day when I decide to cruise to north OC.
