Help with Bike Choices

A friend has a 1998 Trek 6500 he wants to sell me for 150$ its in fine condition...Is his 1998 6500 better than a new trek 3500?

The 3500 is very low end Trek, I would check out the 6500, check components etc, see what needs upgrading and go from there

even though it's 7 years old you think the componets will be better than what comes on the 7 year newer bottom end model?

You answered your own question. Save your money and aim for something in the 400-500 range

Those are my two options...I'm asking which is better...why is it so hard to get a straight answer?

Do you HAVE to buy the bike NOW? They ARE giving you a straight answer. Do you want them to tell you which one to buy for sure? Check out the components and compare. You're the one that knows what you need. Only you can tell if the older bike is in excellent condition. If you like it, buy it. But if you ask these guys for their opinion and they give it, respect it. They know their stuff and they are helping you for free! So be nice. Please.
