Hayes Hfx 9 brake problem

I'm having problems with my hayes hfx 9 brakes. My front brake wasnt working when i went to look at the pads there was fluid on them. I cleaned the rotor and the piston seals and bleed the brakes then spent $30 on new pads. When I went to break the pads in I noticed that the weren't stopping that great. I removed the pads again and saw that they had fluid on them. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and some suggestions on what could be wrong with my brakes.

I'm no expert but it sounds like the brakes are leaking somewhere. Take it to your LBS, they should be able to help.

I'm tring to avoid bringing it to a bike shope because the place where I bought the bike is 2 hrs away. I've only had the bike for 2 months.

If I'm not mistaken there should be some bolts on the caliper, be sure to have them tightened!

it might be the brake bleed nut loose, its the one with the little black rubber stopper in it. oth then that you could have a break somehwere in the calipur. i think i would be cheaper to go to the shop then keep buying pads. good luck solving you problem.

Is the fluid only around the pads and pistons or is there any on top of the caliper? If there is none on the top of the caliper then you will probably need to rebuild the caliper. If it is on top then most likely the hose has a hole in it or the bleeder is loose or stripped.

The fluid is around the pistons and the pads. About how much would it cost to have the caliper rebuilt?

im not sure but if its still under warentee(sp) then they should do it for free. how long have you had the bike and how hard have you ridden it

They probably forgot the o-ring that is goes between the two halves of a caliper. Just keep in mind that you cant use normal o-rings with brakes that use DOT fluid. They are special o-rings that dont deteriorate from the fluid. I have a spare one lying around that I could mail you if you absolutely need it.

Ahhhh, the joy of owning Hydraulic's..... Mine haven't leaked, but you can bet I'll never buy another set, unless I can get the Juicy's for about $50/set....

AVID or HAYES mechanical's are the only way baby!

Decided to bring it into the shop. Thanks for the help though.

I love my Avid mechanicals. Admittedly I haven't riden hydros except in the parking lot around a LBS, but I my mechs have a good feel, are light, easy to adjust and service, and stop wonderfully. I hear that the cheapo discs showing up on $500 bikes aren't very good, but my BB5s have never given my a single problem.

And now we are way off topic, considering that me a trying to fix leak hydros not buy new brakes
