This winter I decided to switch to disc brakes, Got some avid bb7s and a new wheelset, however I have a gary fisher and you need a kit to install the rear brake. They've been out of stock for a few months so I emailed asking if they had any idea when they would be back in stock. I got this reply.

Anybody have any clue why the would be out of the kit but have everypart that makes it up?

Make more $$$ that way, and they are prepackaged in thier seperate units. That is pretty low.

that was my initial reaction, but I thought maybe it was just my rancid cynicism kicking in, guess I'm not alone in thinking this.

You have to love TreFisher, they can't be bothered with actually having an integrated disc brake mount like everyone else. They'll just make you buy a stupid bolt on adapter

This is yet another reason I left my LBS. I didn't know too much about mountain bikes when I bought it. Partly my fault for not researching things as much as I should have. But I asked my shop if the bike was disc brake compatible, because I knew I'd be riding a lot in the mud. They told me "yeah sure its disc compatible", of course failing to mention i'd need this little kit. This is the same place that told me that disc brakes didn't work and i shouldn't get them.

I could go on and on with a list of why I will never return to this shop. I came from a road biking background when I bought my mountain bike. Top tube clearance on a road bike can be next to nothing. I have maybe half an inch. So when the shop puts my six foot self on a 21 inch frame and says it fits, I ride around for a test ride and think nothing of it. I didn't know that mountain bike fit is so different from Road bike fit, once again I should have looked into this before hand, but a decent shop should know this stuff.

I got the adapter at my local Trek dealer (same co. as Fisher anyway). The Fisher dealer couldn't/wouldn't get me one. The Trek guys knew exactly what I needed. They double checked the measurement to make sure and, yup, they had it in stock...$18, no big deal. Apparently, there are some other bikes/brakes that this applies to as well according to them.
