newbie: single chain vs double chain?

Hi

Looking to buy a MTN bike. I would use it a lot in the city and mountains too.

I live in Atlanta, lots of potholes, hills, etc.

I have been reading on + - of single and double chains. The one part Im not clear on a single.....it seems I could run out of gears in the city, spin out?

For example I tried a Marin Trail Nails, and I did feel like I could have had more of the strong gears to go even faster.... The local store guy yesterday was trying to tell me I could change something to make that happen something like change it from 34 to 36 or higher. Not sure what he was talking about

Marin Nail Trail 6 LE Mountain Bike - 2017 Performance Exclusive

Bottom line......will I regret a single chain when riding in the city? Or the right config may work?

Thank u

Where do you want to compromise is the most is the question. If you are mostly riding in the city you are already starting off wrong with a mtn bike. If you are mostly riding it on real mtn bike trails then I wouldn't worry so much about being limited to around 20mph cruising speed on streets cause you aren't going to hit that easily except going down hill anyway.

Went out and tested bikes this weekend. I figured it out. 2 chainrings. I will ride it 50/50 city and non serious mtn.

thanks
