Good bike/deal for a beginner?

I'm a roadie looking to get into mountain biking and I have a friend selling a 2014 Trek Fuel EX 8 29er and I'm curious about the bike. I've actually been testing it on 3-4 rides and it seems to fit fine. It's in really good shape (just a few paint chips) and hasn't been ridden much.

I'd be pretty much just using it for general trail riding and I'm wondering what you guys thought about it as a beginner's mountain bike. I know it doesn't have that slack "modern geometry" and it seems like people aren't a big fan of the fork (other friend who works at the LBS says he doesn't like the fork either) but that probably wouldn't affect a new rider too much since I don't have a point of comparison right?

Also, how accurate is Bicycle Blue Book for pricing? It looks like I might be able to get it for around $800, which seems like a good deal.

Seems like a good deal to me for $800. While the CTD line of Fox shocks/forks may not be anybodies favorite, never road one, they are still insanely better than anything you will get new for around $800. The 69.5 headangle while not slack isn't really steep either, it is fine.

That's twice the bike you would get for anything in that price range new. Bike fits. You don't seem to hate it. If the price works for you, you aren't going to find a better deal.
