Cassette question

Being the tooth count is the same, is there a difference between a MTB cassette or Roadie cassette?

CliffordK 04-27-18 10:54 AM

< 34T, 11 speed cassettes are wider on the freehub body than > 34T, 11 speed cassettes.

Otherwise not much difference. Marketing.

For Shimano, new Road and MTB rear derailleurs have different pull ratios, so potential issues with using huge cassettes on road bikes using MTB derailleurs.

Maybe weight I would venture. Like CliffordK stated, width as well.

The reason I ask, I bought a used Jamis Dakar XCR, installed a new chain and cassette. My first combo was a SRAM PG950 9speed 11-34 while I waited for the one I wanted to install to arrive. When I got the Deore XT (same speed and teeth ratio) and installed it I had nothing but chain skip problems with it on inclines. Wound up putting the "cheaper" cassette back on. So was just wondering if my ordering needs to be MTB specific?

Deore is marketed for MTB. I presume SRAM PG950 too.

For Shimano, Dura Ace, Ultegra, 105, and Tiagra are the Road lines. Also add Claris and Sora.

So, you have both a new chain and a new cassette? How many miles between the two?

Did you adjust your derailleur (end stops and inline cable adjustment) when you changed the cassette?

Shimano and SRAM should be using the same spacing, especially for 9 speed vintage parts.

In my experience New cogs = new chain or you can have problems if the chain is worn.

New chain both time I changed cassettes, SRAM 9speed PC951. The Out of the box Deore XT was skipping right from the get go on inclines. No I didn't do those adjustments. Shifting wasn't an issue, just that darn chain skip when going up an incline.
