Bar end options
Hi. Can anyone recommend a set of bar ends that are "narrow," in the sense that they don't take up much space at the ends of the handlebar? Ideally, I'd like to find some that simply insert into the handlebar and extend it. My goal is to use up as little of the handlebar as possible--I like the positioning of the grips right where they are and would rather not have to move them in, even 1/2 inch. Thanks a lot.

I don’t think you are going to find any traditional bar ends with clamps that won’t take up at least 1/2” on each side. One option may be to look at some of the ergon options that have the bar end integrated with the grips. Since the ends don’t need their own clamp, they add very little width. The other option is to find whatever bar ends you like, and get a new, wider bar to accomodate the extra stuff on the ends. Of course, once you have the wider bar, I would first try the grips at a wider position and see if you like it (if you have not done so already). |
I think there is sold some bike handle extenders..that are not cheap. That would seem to be dangerous if just adding bar ends onto..they might turn too easy. Ergons might be the way to go.

Thanks very much for the info. I am new to this. I will definitely look into the Ergon combination grip/end-bar. How are they attached to the bar in order to stay secure? Is slippage a problem? Thanks again.

Check them out. Ergons are not for everyone, but some folks really love them. |
Ergons.

Handlebars are available in much wider sizes than back in the day. Sure, you'd rather not have to buy and install a new bar, but it might be easier than finding an odd barend.
I use and like the Ergon grips, but haven't tried the ones with the barend built in. They do clamp on solidly and are easily removed when needed. |
