Hi bikers!
I move from my old and ugly 3x chainrings to the single one , damn looks really cool and i can go a lot faster.
But the problem is that sometimes the middle gear jumps , to be honest i never tryed to regulate it since before the conversion to 1x was working fine.
I have an old Deore 9S long cage , do you think the problem is the derailleur itself since i read that conversion must have an "shadow" derailleur?
Anyone has done this 1x setup on an 9s bike?

My friends and I have done several 1x conversions on nine-speed bikes. A clutch derailleur helps, but requires migrating to 10-speed. The bike I ride most often at the moment has a narrow/wide, singlespeed-specific chain ring with alternating wide and narrow teeth that help keep the chain from dropping. I also use chain ring bolt spacers to dial in the spacing of the one ring such that it is centered with respect to the cassette in back. On another bike that I ride less often, my chain ring is sandwiched between a bashguard and an anti-drop device. I've also sometimes used an upper chain guide to hold the chain in place. I still on rare occasions will have the chain drop when the going gets bouncy. It happens rarely, but does happen. One of my friends got tired of that sort of thing and converted his bike to 10-speed with a clutch derailleur. That's been a big improvement for him.

Hi! Thanks for your reply , to be honest i have zero problems with the drop from the chainring (yep is narrow wide).... The problem is just on the derailleur. this morning a friend sayd to use some spacers to move the chainring as more inside possible to make it more stable. I got some spacers and i'am going to test it....

In case that spacers will still fail can you recommend me the cheap shadow derailleur i can find or other types specific for 1x conversion.

I misunderstood your original post. Do you have a bike shop near you? Have them check the derailleur alignment using a hanger alignment gauge. If your chain is jumping between cogs on the rear cassette, then I would check the hanger alignment and readjust the derailleur. You need a tool to verify alignment. Park Tools will have a video on derailleur adjustment. Also verify that your shift cable is clean and free of gunk, and that the shift wire slides smoothly.

So, basically are you telling me that 1x9 Conversion can work fine even with my old derailleur?
This afternoon im going to go into a bike shop to cheeck it.

If your chain is jumping between cogs on the rear cassette, that to me suggests a misaligned or maladjusted derailleur. It's hard to say more without having the bike in front of me.

I have been running a 1x9 conversion with the stock Shimano Alivo derailleur for two years on my Giant Stance, no problems. I'm even running an oval chainring.
