How well do mountain bikes hold value?
Simply put, if I bought a Hardrock Sport now during the summer and kept it in good condition, how much might i be able to sell it back next year?

It depends on multiple factors. How common are they? How good shape? How much was it when you bought it?
Cheaper bikes wouldn't retain a lot of their value. More expensive bikes will keep a lot of their value.

So ahow about a Hardrock Sport that I buy now at $330? If it's in good condition, how much should I expect to get when I sell it next year?

My thinking is that they lose 50% value the first year. After that take 25% off each additional year from the value before.
In other words you buy a $2,000 bike.
One year later it is worth $1,000.
Two years old it is worth $750.
Three years old it is worth $560.
This is just how it generally seems to work out. Not sure why.

^ That is a good formula, that probably is what you're looking for if you're buying a bike. It would be a little harder to sell the upper end bikes because you would need to find someone that is into hard core biking as well.

Oh, keep in mind that upgrades generally do not up the value of a bike very much at all. Just because the upgrades were worth the money to the original owner does not mean they are worth anything to the potential buyer.

In that case, keep all the upgrades and put all the old crap back on and sell it (unless it is broken)
