Supposed 1991 titanium GT

Hello all,
Someone is selling this bike locally saying that it is a 1991 titanium GT. But which one? Those drop outs look especially odd or rather, special. Anyone got input?

It also looks like they scrubbed off all decals which is really annoying. The finish looks to be in pretty bad shape, at least on the head tube.

Thanks and regards,
Christian

Found this: 1991 GT USA Mountain bike catalog | Retrobike Hope it helps. GT's titanium was called a Xizang LE (from the link-not firsthand knowledge)--there is another shown, but according to the info, had a chromoly bolt-on rear end.

Yeah I had found that too but none of the frames have those special weld joints on the rear dropouts.

May have found it. The GT Lightning had stays like that. But according to some info I read, it was only make in 1997-98. Here's the link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lightning-G...-/233419801793 Can ya tell I'm as curious as you about the bike?

Ask the seller to look on the bottom of the bottom bracket. If it says made in the USA it's a xixang. If not possible that it's a lightning.

Those bullet shaped seat stay welds look similar to what tst made back in the day, I'd guess it's a xixang

looks to be titanium, welds look perfect-if it is the finish isn't an issue.use a fine scotchbrite 3m pad for a brushed look or polish for a shiny surface if you go for it.$750. or???

It looks like a lightening. But those bullet shaped seat-stay welds are throwing me for a loop.

Looks like a 94 xixang GT Catalogue 1994 | Catalogues | Retrobike

Don't know about the only 10 race bikes, but who knows. Might have been a sponsored riders.

Bottom line, those bullet stays are sandvic/tst production most likely. That means made in Kennewick WA, USA made xixang. It should have "made in USA" stamped next to a G serial # that states size and the production #. Like G20143 would be 20" 143rd produced.

Hey, thanks a lot. You really nailed it. I would have been interested since it is the Xizang but they were asking too much for it. If I could haggle him down to 600 I would do it but he wants 1100 so if I even asked he would just be insulted.

Edit: I asked him if he would sell the frame only.

No new info to offer. Just that this thread made me feel real remorse for getting rid of mine. I think mine was a 97 or so, XTR, Manitou Palmer green fork. My all time favorite MTB was a very similar Zaskar LE, the Xizang was like that but better. I'd transitioned to full roadie by then and just never rode it.

I got it for pennies from a friend who had become short on cash. I can't remember what I sold it for but certainly not enough to make getting rid of it worth it.

I would concur with the price...600.00 maybe 700.00 tops....just don't think he'll get a grand, or 1100 for it...then again, who knows ?

here in the US the Ti 26er market has really taken a beating.
For that price you can sometimes find a full Moots or Merlin
I recently sold my Dean with a soft tail and a fork for 600.

I think that has a lot to do with disc brakes. I can't build a modern wheelset with rim brakes. For example: carbon, 30mm internal width and hookless.

This is actually why I am no longer even considering really nice or rare rim-brake frames/bikes that I see.

Seriously, it's been hard finding a high end 26" wheelset that takes rim brakes. Or a decent fork, for that matter.

Right. I think there may be some money to be had for a small company who offers good, modernized 26" rim brake rims. Hell, I ride primarily in dry summer conditions and would even consider a carbon option. With kool-stop carbon pads there would be zero issue. I bought a couple of carbon rim-sets from Aliexpress and the seller was nice enough to surface one of them for my superlight Kuota road bike with rim brakes. The rims work great so I asked another seller if they would do it for that specific 26er carbon rim. He said no. It sucks because I know that it would work for my application.
