Can I swap a 1 1/8 steerer pipe out for a 1''?

I'm upgrading my front forks on my old mongoose mountain bike but i'm having trouble finding any good forks that have a 1'' steerer pipe so I was wondering I a could take out the 1 1/8'' pipe for a 1'' pipe using an adaptor. Could anyone please help me?
Thanks.

Bikes: A steel framed 26" off road tourer from a manufacturer who thinks they are cool. Giant Anthem. Trek 720 Multiroad pub bike. 10 kids bikes all under 20". Assorted waifs and unfinished projects.

Not really. Probably no unless you had access to a good frame builder and a lathe. Rigid forks you'd need to sweat out the 1 1/8" steerer, then have a 1" steerer adapted and brazed in or cut off the 1 1/8" if tigged and weld in a 1". Suspension forks with an alloy crown would be even harder to deal with..

Why do you want to upgrade and how much money are you willing to spend?

I did this with an old Marzocchi z2. It did have a bolt on steer tube though. Used an RST 1" as replacement

I want to upgrade because I got the bike second hand and the current forks have seized up and are no longer functional. I can only spend $200aud Maximum (I'm 12 so I don't have much money)

I've measured some stuff and I think i'll be able to sand down the cups where they go into the frame and make enough room for the 1 1/8'' pipe

Probably not the best idea. Is there a local bike shop that could help with this project? Or could you save some money and get a bike that has a working fork?

Here's a question, do you like your front teeth? Sanding down? Not recommended. Got pics? Looking for a sus fork or rigid? Looked at some used stuff? tried contacting a bike shop?
