I wouldn't say it's too heavy but how heavy are you?

Ricardo 07-10-05 08:12 PM

I'm 150 lbs.

Well, if you're not racing, it's just fine.

But if you are racing, a 150lb hardtail is probably holding you back a little bit.

I have the fortune of being a big guy. I can sweat off the difference between a "light" hardtail and a "heavy" hardtail in a couple of hours. My hardtail weights 34 pounds and I don't care.

I'm a 200lb guy riding a 31lb hardtail and I'm just fine with it, I like having it built strong, it's less likely to break on me, and I can feel comfortable with it on any trail.

.

I would think that a 150lb hardtail would hold most people back considerably.
My Cromoly hardtail comes in around 30-32 depending on configuration

Doh!!!! You know what I meant. A 32# racing bike for a 150lb guy is too heavy. Especially when the guy is only riding a 15" or 17" frame.

I have a friend here with a 23# full suspension bike (for a 170# rider).

I'm 165 lbs. and bet you $1 million I can leave you in the dust Bud....

BTW, I have a 17-18" frame....

Plus, I'm 43 yrs. old.....

Still wanna bet?

I'm sorry, did I say I could outrace you??? Did I say you would be "slow" if you were on a 32# medium sized frame???

I was merely commenting on what on acceptable weights for a medium sized hardtail mountain bike intended for racing.

All this is really moot, the guy doesn't race, it doesn't matter how heavy his bike is. But most racing types would consider that rig VERY heavy.

To me a 32 pound hard tail sounds pretty heavy, but that is just for the type riding that I do. For your riding style a 32 pound hardtail may be perfect. It's all about what you ride and what you enjoy. If you enjoy riding the bike then it doesn't matter how much it weighs.

For what it's worth the hardtail I just built weighs about 22.5 pounds and I consider it to be heavy. I am already trying to figure out the best way to put it on a diet. :D

KillerB - You very well may be able to outride me on a heavy bike, but you would be miles ahead of me if you were on a lighter one. ;)

If you can pedal uphill, it's not too heavy.
