Resale values.
Put an advert in the local paper this week to sell my Cannondale road bike. My LBS gave me a rough idea of what price to pitch at, and wow, I was actually offered more for it!
I never bought the bike as an investment but I was really surprised that it had not lost as much value as I thought it might have done. I can't say whether it's the name that sells or just the condition (it was immaculate, btw). Whatever, I can now get some seriously overdue accessories.
I think it makes the point clear, but how well you look after something ultimately influences how people respond to it. Like they say, you only have one shot to make a first impression.

Not yet, alas. I'm waiting for (a) payday, and (b) some other bucks to come in, that should happen this week hopefully. I really hope to get it in the next two weeks. We have some dry weather at the moment which'll be a good time to break it in, break me in, and keep my new pride and joy relatively clean for a bit until I abandon all, and ride in the mud and what have you.
Sad thing is, I only work 2km from home, so riding in is hardly worth dressing up for. We don't have showers at the office to make leisurely detours an option, but hey-ho, I'll find the time to enjoy it.
