I've decided to convert my Giant STP 2 to single speed. I researched a few options for the best way to go about doing this. The one I think is the best is the chain tensioner route. I'm going to purchase a Shimano freewheel (around $30 CAD) and my mechanic is going to put it on my hub. I'm also going to purchase a chain tensioner. Now my mechanic can either order me a DMR (around $70 CAD) or a Rennen (roughly $150 CAD) chain tensioner. I am on a budget (delivering the newspaper just doesn't cut it) so it's either DMR, or if it doesn't work well, no single speed at all. Any reccomendations? Thanks

I would strongly suggest saving up the money for the Eccentric Rear HUB. Wouldn't need a tensioner then. But if you must try it, I would go with the DMR tension seeker 2.

does your bike have horizontal drop outs? because if it does, you dont need a tensioner

I'm guessing it would be fine. Surly makes a 'singulator'?
Not sure about the type of drops it is intended for.

What type of chainring and chain are you to be running?

I'm thinking that a 'adapted' drive using a 8-9 spd chain would be a bad idea.
Flimsy rings are a bad idea too, without a gearing, the drive is put under way more stress.
The chainrings are beefier on ss, bmx.

? Can you inform more about the drive?

if you run a tensioner, drop out style matters not, for you dont have to adjust the wheel forwards, and backwards. but you could simply go single speed with out a tensioner if you had horizantal d/outs

So far for single speed I could get the DMR Tension Seeker 2 or the Rennen tensioner. I obviously want the Rennen more but it's more money. If I got the DMR, I would have more money for another upgrade. Then Im getting a BMX 16t freewheel. This is the way so far that I'm going to do single speed. It will probobly take me like a month before deciding how to do it. Buying the Eccentric Rear HUB is not an option unfortunately due to my low budget. What could be some ways that would work but for less than $160 CAD? Would the way I mentioned work? Thanks
