stripped bolt

I just did the the downieville downhill for the first time, tues. before the downieville classic. it was the best ride iv'e ever done. it was a little rough at first adapting to the steep angle on my enduro. i went to change the flip flop link the night before and found that i had stripped a bolt! but i can't really see how they expected me to get a bolt out that was so tight in the first place. i'm going to have to drill it, anyone have any pointers?
