I hear New Jersey is good for flatland BMX. Besides that I would say definitely NOT downhill. I think konarider is somewhere in NJ and he has a FR bike he uses for trails as well. I would say probably hardtail depending on what your doing. Do you live in NJ or did you just move there? My cousin lives there and all i can say is that its probably the flattest state there is(with the exception of the Appalachian mountains in the far north). NJ in general is pretty damn flat though. He rides flatland and everyone he knows rides bmx. I don't know of any mountain bike trails unless you include Diablo freeride park. I would have to go with either XC or FR if I were you. Hardtail also, unless you want to dish out over one thousand dollars.

There is mountain creek in Vernon, NJ. The urban scene is great in NJ as well, there are several good big trail systems in NJ as well, you have Round Valley, Pine Barons, and a few others, depending on where you live, plattekill, snowshoe, and Jim Thorpe are withing easy driving distance. As for a bike a freeride hardtail would fit the bill the best.

your best bet would be a xc bike that can take some *all mountain-ish* stuff. i dont know of ANY freeride stuff or dh. round valley is good, alaire state park, and there are some other ones you can find on the internet.

bot dont get a dh or a extreme fr bike. i am using a kona full-suspension. i get more speed on the rocky descents that they have on the trails around here.

I do know of a potential hidden gem that isn't too far from Round Valley that is an easy ride from my front door. Don't know if I should share it though.

Mercer County Park is a nice place to ride. It's right outside of Lawerenceville. In Pa, there are many good riding places like Core Creek Park and Penny Pack Park.
We ride at Core Creek alot.

As far as a good bike for NJ, well I agree with the hardtail. Lok into GT, Giant , Trek , Specialized and Cannadale. Many good likes around.
In lawerenceville , there is a really good bike shop. Alot a good Trek dealer in Princeton off Rt27 right near Princeton University.

I dont understand this. NJ is a state, not a terrain condition. The answer should come from more information on where you intend to ride. NJ has many different bike trails, mountainous, hilly, flat, rough, technical, dirt, etc. Street cruising or getting around from here to there.

North Jersey, especially as you go toward PA has tons of great mountain trails with all types of conditions. Most of the large parks/forest reserves have trails of some sort. I grew up in north jersey and I dont think I ever had a problem finding trails, even unusual conditions like technical dry rocky riverbeds, to extremely tough (for me) 1000+ft climbs.

Start here https://www.state.nj.us/transportatio...ountymaps.shtm
And talk to the locals too.

I agree with Dakels. There are plenty of hilly trails in Bergen County, especially near the Ramapo valley region. Certainly not mountainous terrain, but I wouldn't say it is flat, either.
