Book gift idea
Went gravel riding with my son this past fall and we ended up doing some mountain bike trails. He was surprised I stuck right with him all the way (i'm 34 years older than my son). Reminded him my first mountain bike was a 1983 Miyata Ridge Runner, and 10 years before that it was my Schwinn Varsity. The term "mountain bike" may be only a few decades old, but the activity has been around a long, long time. Although I no longer off-road ride, my body still knows how it is done!
Today in the mail I received a copy of Off-road Heroes. A history of mountain biking, from it's cyclo-cross roots to today's crazy extreme riders. Although I just got it, and have only read through a few selections in the book, I gotta tell folks about it as a fantastic gift idea for a bicycle nut like myself. The old-timers will appreciate the nod to cyclo-cross and the attendant images that go with it. |
Nice recommendation, thanks! :thumb:
I recently read Being Gary Fisher and the Bicycle Revolution. It's quite entertaining and offers a fairly exhaustive history of mountain biking and the Crested Butte & Marin instigators. I definitely recommend it to those of us old enough to remember the early days, or anyone interested in them. |
My book, Fat Tire Flyer: Repack and the Birth of Mountain Biking is the definitive work on the subject.
VeloPress took me out of print last year. I believe I will have a new publisher soon. |
