How should I start my training?

I have a backround in cross-country running and I've been on a couple one day, hundred mile road trips on my huffy. My first "real" mountain bike is on its way and I want to start training for endurance events. I know I should probably get an aerobic base before I start any kind of specific training, but should I do long rides- on my mountain bike- on the road, or on the singletrack?

Start out with long easy (spinning) rides. If you go to hard to fast it won't be as much fun. Listing to your body will tell you a lot about how hard is too hard.

My suggestion is to bring a bag and a ton of liquids, go out as far as you can biking, then bike back to your place. Do that several times a week. Try to push yourself a little further each time. That will build up your endurance specifically for biking. Going through different terrain on the mountain bike will help you also. It won't be as fast as a roadbike, but I think its a good thing for training.

At first it is never a good idea to train. It is much more important to just go out and have fun riding for a while. Then you will start figuring out what aspects of your riding need the most work. Then start training to make yourself stronger in those areas.

If you have already done a 100 mile ride on a huffy then you are probably in better shape than most people on this site.

for endurance rides, it's more of what ur body likes to refuel itself to keep going. Try making loops back to the car where you can get a sandwhich, re fill water ect ect. Most endurance races are laps of about 10-15 miles. Find out what your body doesn't like on training ride rather then finding out on race day and hating it. Stay on the bike as long as you can. If your training for a 12 hour enduro, then try to stay on the bike for 75-90% of that 12 hours. Of course, don't go out and try to ride for 12 hours, you'll have to work up to it.
