I was wondering if anybody knows if I can use my 8 speed xt rapid fire shifters and deraileur with a 9 speed cassette. Will I just have to tune out either the highest or lowest gear or will it not shift into gear right? I'm wondering if the cogs are closer together on the 9 sp and it won't shift right with the 8sp shifter/deraileur. Any help would be appreciated. Also, is there a way to change the cassette without the actual cassette tool?
Thanks.

The spacing is closer on a 9 speed cassette so they are not compatible. There is really no easy way to change out the cassette without the proper tool.

If you have a 9 speed cassette you need 9 speed shifters. Most newer derailleurs are compatible with either 8 or 9 speed. Most likely all you should need is new 9 speed shifters to match the cassette. You really do need the proper tool to remove and install a cassette. Those tools are fairly cheap though.
